I backordered a gpu over 5 months ago and there's still no update?

Over 5 months ago I backordered a GPU and I still haven't received a quote on the price or when it will be available to buy? I already paid the shipping fee upfront at the time of purchase but how much longer will this process go for? Is this normal?

    Don't hold your breath.

    There are huge problems all along the GPU supply line. In fact, there have been problems with almost everything that relies on semiconductors in recent months. For example, car manufacturers have had to remove options or suspend production of cars simply because they couldn't get the chips they needed.

    This is due to a range of problems. It's been known for a long time that the semiconductor industry was vulnerable to disruption because there are only a few facilities in the world that can perform some of the vital steps in making chips. The pandemic shut down various stages of chip production for a while, causing order backlogs to develop all along the line. At the same time, lots of people wanted to buy or upgrade their hardware because they were working at home. Then the economic recovery was stronger and faster than companies had predicted.

    The latest GPUs are a particular problem partly because of the high demand for them from gamers and particularly from cryptocurrency miners. Apparently it's also the case that scalpers have been using bots to buy up every card as soon as it's available so they can sell them to desperate people at inflated prices on ebay or wherever.

    As for when you'll get the card you want, nobody here can tell you. The best you can do is check the latest projected availability date on the website of the company you've handed your money over to, or maybe contact them directly.

      It is also possible that the vendor is trying to order more GPUs from the supplier that they get the GPUs from the manufacturer. Given that backorders usually take about 2 weeks the vendor is probably facing delays and that lots of people have backordered the same product.
