I base my self worth on exam results. is this normal?

I feel low, down and unintelligent because I did really bad in one of my exams. A lot worse than I expected. Now I know that exams are just a memory test for the most part but when someone you know that worked as hard as you gets a much better grade you just can't help to feel like an idiot?

I feel like all the effort I put was pointless and I just feel really down and pathetic over an exam result. I feel as this determines my self esteem and my confidence. Is it normal and how do I get over it?

If someone asked you who you are, what would you say?

    "I'm a student."

If you identify as a student then of course you'll feel bad at doing poorly on an exam. It's good incentive to improve, and very normal.

What you are is the source of your esteem. There is no esteem found in "I'm a human" or "I'm a nice person to be around", you have to aim high and sometimes you miss.

omg exams are the worst, but they shouldnt define you. if you tried your best then nothing else should matter. i know parents get all crazy when you dont get good results, trust me im without a phone right now because of it, but you are amazing; you dont need to take an exam to define that

Please don't let grades define you! You know you are smart in ways that aren't tested on your exams. I personally care a little more about actually learning the material, and then I think it's okay that I got a C because I tried my best and I learned something, which is the whole point.
