I believe a higher minimum wage will force people to work harder

I don't believe in handouts from the government but I do believe in having a much higher minimum wage, let's say $20 an hour. Some people think I'm a bit contradictory but I think it's good for society in the long run.

First, if you get paid at least $20 an hour, you must work and add enough value that justifies being paid $20/hr. It's like a carrot and a stick effect. Being paid less than $10/hr is a royal waste of anyone's life and although such a person should not deserve $20/hr if they only do $10 worth of work every hour, I think a higher minimum wage will incentivize or even force people to either work harder and more efficiently or just not bother to work in the first place.

How many $30.00 Big Macs with $20.00 fries and a $10.00 small cola will you be buying next year? Yea me neither. So what will happen is that more people will be out of work, because you can't have a low priced product if your managed costs are too high. Businesses will go out of business. The people who lost their jobs won't be able to get work anywhere else. If they could do that they already would have. Liberals who like to give away other people's money have no concept of what it takes to make money. You can't tax yourself into prosperity. All you get is trickle up poverty. Jobs at McDonalds were never meant to support yourself. They were meant to be jobs for kids going to high school. I haven't seen a high school aged person working in a McDonalds for quite some time. But I do see the 40 year old person who can barely speak English and has to have help pushing the pictures on the cash register.

Yup. Trickle up poverty will result. Earned income tax credits would avoid some of these problems. But the lost tax revenue would start subsidizing inefficiency after a certain point.

Or they will just continue slacking and get paid twice as much for half their worth, ending up in even more price hikes that consumers have to pay for products.

Why not give workers a fair pay? Yes.
Why not give workers a share in the company they work for?? Hellz Yeah.
That would make them work harder and more efficiently because if profit is more, they can get more money from their share's worth. And worker related theft and waste will be less because all the workers will be checking that the other workers don't steal or waste things that cuts the profit margin.

You misunderstand how supply and demand work. If someone gives you $100 dollars for free, you are not then going to do $100 worth of economic activity.

If you're paid $20/hr to fry burgers or $20/hr to do lab work (which is more than most lab technicians are paid), most people won't bother with the B.S. degree and will go straight to fast food.

I'm not the OP but it could be argued that if the minimum wage is increased, people will have to work harder for the money because minimum wage employees are very easily replaced. So if you slack off it's not too difficult to let you go and hire and train someone else who wants the job.

People aren't machines, employees perform better if they are treated like they are actually valued.

"people will have to work harder for the money because minimum wage employees are very easily replaced. So if you slack off it's not too difficult to let you go and hire and train someone else who wants the job."

Why will they have to work harder? They can just move to another minimum wage job, just like they do now. The only way that will be the case is if the number of available jobs is reduced, and I don't think that a massive spike in unemployment would be a positive thing.

"People aren't machines, employees perform better if they are treated like they are actually valued."

In small businesses, maybe, but not in the corporate world. Broadly speaking, employees are treated better by employers if they are valued, not the other way around.

I think there should be no minimum wage let the free market decide what your worth. If there is a demand for you you'll get paid accordingly

I'm not too sure about that. I'm on the fence about this.

Free market isn't as clear cut as we hoped.

A fine example is the current Healthcare system in the US. The idea of privatised insurance companies competing for business has not slowed the skyrocketing cost of healthcare in the US. Even with the current system, the US is spending more per capita on Healthcare compared to countries with socialised healthcare.

    I wouldn't argue with that.

No. If you want to force people to work harder, chain them up and flog them with whips.

Don't even know where to start. This is one of the least informed, ridiculous opinions I've seen put forward on this site, and that's saying something.

I think the fair wage would be 7: 00 for minors and 10.00 for adults. 15 is just too high but 10 is fair.

Yeah... I really doubt we need more company's leaving the country since you raised the wages. We already raised it to 10$ an hour. It is really selfish to want to screw over the rest of the jobless people in this country. Yeah you might be struggling but so are all the homeless/jobless people age 18-24. You should try considering them too.

The company's are already leaving the country for cheap labor. If you raise prices anymore, there is going to be even less jobs and thanks to the US fucked up welfare system its extremely difficult to get assistance even if you are homeless. You have to be insane or come from a low income family if you want assistance for anything.

So putting more people out of home and job is not helping anything. It just shows selfishness and ignorance. Your idea is stupid and so are all the other ones to fix this issue. What they need to do is pass a law that makes it highly beneficial for company's to hire workers in the Us, and beneficial for low paying jobs to hire new workers age 18-24.

While at the same time putting a hefty fee for company's that want to outsource jobs. We also need to get more transitional programs for young people. Like maybe get mentor-ship or job opportunity programs for youth. Not just the mentally ill and the poverty stricken either. I MEAN ALL STUDENTS!
