I called in on my 2nd because of a bad snowstorm

Does it look bad on me? The news said the snowstorm will clear up tonight and my car may get stuck because not all roads are shoveled out

Your OP lacks a lot of details, such as when the snow was predicted to arrive and how that timing related to your scheduled times to arrive and leave work.

If it was due to arrive while you were at work, it duly did, the snow was as heavy as predicted and you get any shit from your boss, then I think you'd be wise to look for alternative work. Some bosses honestly believe that their employees should be willing to risk their life and limb in the cause of keeping money flowing into their business. People like that don't give a fuck about you, so why should you give a fuck about them and the state of their bank balance?

Megadriver outlines a situation where he fired a guy after he'd taken one too many sick days that were conveniently timed to give him long weekends. That seems reasonable to me, but I would hope that he wouldn't expect employees to always show up even if the streets are flooded or a metre-deep in snow, or a storm has blown down trees and powerlines all over the place.

Calling in for something that may happen, even if it eventually did happen, doesn't look good. Especially on your 2nd day, I'd probably fire you or at least a last warning would be given.

I've ran 24 - 7 operations before, we count on the people that make it to work prior to the event. If it gets bad enough that others can't come in then it's normally bad enough that it's not save to leave either. We normally asked those workers to stay and pay overtime. If it continues long enough then we'll set up some type of sleeping and off time areas.

Exception for really big things like hurricanes, wild fires, floods, where they are predicted at almost 100% and even being on the outskirts would not be safe.

Funny, no matter how bad the weather gets, I normally have some people call in but I seldom have any ask or say they have to stay because they are predicting or the weather is too bad to go home.

Honestly, it depends on your car and how bad it was. And what your commute is like.

Yes it's bad. If I was your boss, I'd tell you to not show up at all.

I fired a guy from the dealership once, cause he'd conveniently get sick on Fridays and Mondays. I hate this type of attitude.

You're trying to make a first impression and skipping work ain't helping.

If there was a legitimate snow storm many companies will not hold that against you; especially early in snow season where people have not fully adopted snow driving techniques. But, some might.

Don’t listen to all these people saying you should risk your life for a job. If it was truly bad like you are saying it was then I wouldn’t risk it either. If it wasn’t really that bad and you could have made it then I understand them being upset. Just recently we had about 20 cars that got in a wreck on the interstate due to ice. A lot of people died. It’s serious.

  • Yes it did and the snow is deep. I watched an SUV get stuck near my drove way. and I rent the basement but my landlord who normally parked in the front, he parked in the back because the snow plow pushed snow in front too much snow in the front of the house
