I can't stand pentecostal church services

Last year I was 'dragged' to a Pentecostal church service by a girl I was trying to date. As it turned out, she happens to be in the church choir. To be honest I would have preferred she wasn't even in the choir but that is not enough to start any major grudge.

If anything would stir real dislike it would be in the way some Pentecostal church services are conducted, and the mannerisms of members of the church ministry and its congregation.

The music was maxed out in volume, the singers straining their voices to be heard over the instruments. The noise was painful. In the middle of the worship service, the music pastor would urge everyone to ‘shout to the Lord’, whereby everyone would respond by shouting at the top of their lungs. I would cover my ears and wish I had stayed in the car until worship was over. The prayer service was just as bad as everyone shouted their prayers at the top of their lungs all at once. My head started to spin and I retreated to the back of the church.

Eventually, I had to abondon the service all together when the lead pastor took over the already turbulent scene demanding louder 'AMENS' each time he shouted his annoyingly earsplitting repetitive 'Hallelujahs'.

    You'd imagine people would use their inside voices when inside their creator's home. I guess that's too much to ask of some people.

      Well actually, I'd imagine some people want to feel the animal magnetism of sexual idolatry and scream into the catharsis of orgasmic nirvana. Now, don't tell me to fuck off with biblical references. I'm not endorsing this. I'm not endorsing you. I don't give a fuck what they think or what you think.

      I'm only saying that some people (not me) are like this; libidinal frenzy makes sense to them, okay? Whether or not you go fuck yourself is completely up to you. Please leave me out of it.

      I practice my 'prayers' to a higher being from whence all that's in existence in the universe and beyond must have sprang from as mere quiet conversations with the being from wherever I happen to be. I know too well that religious infrastructure is simply wrongly labeled as God's dwelling place, and I hope you too in fact do.

        While it may be true that,

        "Yet the most High dwelleth not in houses made by hands, as the prophet saith: Heaven is my throne, and the earth my footstool. What house will you build me? saith the Lord; or what is the place of my resting?"
        -Acts 7:48-49

        The church is a symbolic home for the Lord. While He may not need nor be contained by the churches, they are still His houses. They are made by man for God, and they are given by man to God, so, they may not be His dwelling place, but they are God's homes.

      If you read my post well, you might have realized I'm not an extremist in my dislike for religious activities, I never go to churches or any other religious places of worship so I can communicate with.... God, shall we say?

          A higher being or force from where all existence originates from, and in due course, returns to. Why do you let it get to a point where it's a bias? Simply acknowledge that all religions are in one way or another a deviation from the fact that all existence is from one single source, don't waste any ounce of your energy on any religious bias(es).

            I'm agnostic not atheist. Atheist dont belive in any kind of deity. Agnostics believe that it's impossible or out of our current capacity to detect the exsistance of god. Having a christian bias means I just support Christian's more than other religions.

    I don't blame you for not liking it. I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church where the Bible was followed like it's supposed to be not by a bunch of women having seizures claiming to catch the Holy Ghost and then think that it's okay then we go be a slut after church is over or idiot men who think that playing with rattlesnakes that have been sedated makes them God like. Completely normal and I salute you for lasting as long as you did in that Festival of hypocrites

    They shimmy and shake and touch and heal and speak jibberish. What's not to like? They're pretty much Jesus if he had 4 strokes, terrible mental health issues, and were an Oklahoma snake oil sails person.

    I have to admit, I have been that girl before. I was cringing for the guy. I was baptised in a Pentecostal church but I don't identify as a Pentecostal - there are things about contemporary Pentecostal ways of doing church that I don't like, and OP covers some of them. Did you know that in the first Pentecostal churches, people used to sit in complete silence? It was a practice that they called 'Waiting on the Lord'. Practices change with time - the more important thing to me is the core substance of the beliefs (and there are some Pentecostal beliefs that I don't share, either).

    I've never liked church services, but that sounds hellish to me. Like everyone was doing their flat-out best to work the congregation up into a state of mass hysteria.

    Interesting how it's the diametric opposite of a Quaker meeting for worship where people can sit in a circle in complete silence for an hour if nobody present feels moved to share any insights they may have recently gained.

        The concept of "speaking in tongues" where you are so compelled by Christ that you can preach the gospel in an actual language that you don't know. "Shabalamalamaoeutnsuejt" isn't it.
