I cant stay asleep!

I can't fall asleep and I can't stay asleep either.
Usually when I get home at 4, I clean, I do some other work, then I relax, have dinner, take a shower (around 7 or 8pm), then wind down. I have other people in my house and one stays up late and the other gets up early and I am really light sensitive. Even when nobody's up and it's dark out, I still seem to wake up throughout the night, meaning I am half asleep and distracted during the day.
Does anyone have any remedies to fall asleep and stay asleep?
AND is this normal?

There are a couple of things that come to mind that could be contributing to this. Like you mentioned, you could just be a light sleeper and seemingly insignificant visual and auditory inputs rouse you. If that's the case, investing in earplugs and a sleeping mask may be worth your while. You might also have sleep apnea, and your body is constantly having to awaken in order for you to breath. If this is the case, a CPAP or BiPAP may be helpful (consult a physician before using these of course).

Overall, I'd suggest taking a sleep study. This is perhaps the best way to determine the cause behind your inability remain asleep.

I don't have trouble falling asleep but staying asleep, yes. I wake up in the middle often.

I've found going for a run before sleep helps me have uninterrupted sleep. I have a friend for who this worked wonders for too. Alas, it's not always possible to go for a run that late. Laziness or otherwise
