I cook for my golden retriever

I have a fear of my golden retriever getting cancer so when she was a puppy I decided to start cooking for her and giving her better food.

I do actually cook breakfast and dinner for my golden retriever. I usually cook chicken or meat, rice and vegetables- for treats I give her fruits and vegetables. I cook for her every single day.

My wife and all my friends think I am crazy for cooking for my dog but I cannot help it. I just want my dog to have a healthy and happy life.

Is that normal? or am I obsessing about her health?

It's not unusual for people to cook for their pets. I knew an elderly couple that fed thier dog the same food they had for dinner, so if it was pork chop night the dog had her own too. I also have few friends who started doing the same thing after loosing, or having their pets get sick, from the contaminated food from China a few years back.
The only precaution I'd take is to speak with your vet to make sure you're not inadvertantly giving her something harm full (something about garlic is stuck in the back of my mind). And to be sure she's getting all her nutritional needs meet. By the way rice in moderation is ok for dogs. My vet would tell us to feed my dog chicken and rice anytime he was sick or if his appitite droped (he got depressed when we'd go on vacation and have to leave him home).

i have friends who do this for their dogs, too. it's normal, just not very common. probably healthier for the dog, too, all natural food, as long as she's getting all the nutrients she needs.

  • its borderline normal, and by borderline I mean as long as you arent sacrificing your own health and nutrition to do this I dont see anything wrong with it.

Idiots like calgarth would argue that food should go to needy (read "wanty") bums or starving kids in Africa or some stupid shit. Which even if you did donate to that it probably wouldnt end up there since charity is run by people who would steal most of it first.

Besides charity begins at home, your dog gives you more back then those people ever will anyway and you didnt cause them to be in the situation they are in so spoil your dog as much as you can.

My dogs wish they were so lucky! I believe that pets should be fed well too. Mine eat primarily table scraps and whole food snacks but, are supplemented with dog food. My cat hunts but, is supplemented with dry food as well.
I do think that some pet owners can go overboard with the idea though. If people have enough money to feed pets 5 star meals they could be feeding hungry children.
It's a matter of keeping life in perspective and remembering the past. What did/do pets eat when they have no access to pet food - or their owners were not told by pet food companies to by their products?
I like to think of the old show Little House on the Prairie sometimes. What did their dogs eat?

You should probably cut down or cut out the rice though, since dogs aren't made to digest grains. Try fish too (cooked and no bones.)

She must be one happy dog :)
