I dislike it when people sing happy birthday to me at work iin?

I really dislike when people at work want to sing 'Happy Birthday' to me.

Even when I tell them 'Please, I don't like being sung to, I 'd rather you just say happy birthday'. They still go ahead and sing that stupid song anyway!

Am I the only one that thinks this way?

Is it normal?

    • Because I work in a place where the first week you start work they put your name and birthday up on a big white board (along with everyone else's).

I swear some weeks it seems like I spend half my working hours standing around a table singing a bad rendition of 'Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you...' to someone I hardly know.

I just want the singing to be over so I can get my piece of cake.

Just tell yourself that they are not making it to make you feel bad but that they really mean good. It's just a song and it doesn't last two minutes. Just fake a smile and say thank you.

    • Yes I tried that, I know they are well meaning. It still feels kind of dumb and awkward though.

I just wanna cut straight to the cake part.

I don't like when anyone does it to me. My family have never let me live down a temper tantrum I had at my third birthday because I didn't want anyone to sing it to me. They think it's hilarious but I just find it embarrassing.

My kids regularly have birthday parties for me, regardless of the date. Actually, that's not entirely true. They don't on my actual birthday.

First world problem! I like receiving positive attention, it's better than people being complete bastards and treating me like shit. Sure, it can be embarrassing, but there are worse things so I have little patience when people complain about having Happy Birthday sung to them. Think of the poor sods who get no such kindnesses done unto them, but would so appreciate the smallest gesture of affection.

Okay, I did feel compelled to edit my comment, and add that office parties can feel a bit forced and phoney. Ideally I wouldn't want everyone there to sing and eat my cake, I just want my pals not the jerks. Offices can be filled with assholes... true that.

I'm that person that INSISTS we sing to the birthday person, even though I don't like it myself.

I just look at it as an annoying/awkward thing that we all have to go through just for the sake of the spirit.

Totally normal... I get annoyed to the point of giving them 'I will kill you' glares....yeah I'm hectic ! Lol...they stop immediately. I just don't like that kind of forced attention on me just because its a date that I was born on. I'm grateful.. I pray :P but honestly bad singing annoys me !

Its normal. I hate it when my family or anyone else sings happy birthday to me. Maybe its because I hate being noticed by other people other than my senpai but who knows ,really? Its like can we skip this whole 'Happy Birthday' thing and go to the part where we eat the cake? AND DON'T STARE AT ME GODDAMNIT!

Some people don't want the unwarrented attention. That's pretty normal

I hate it too. I always used to hate when I was little and my parents would take me out to dinner and they would tell the waiter it was my birthday. Then they all come out and sing to you and everyone is like staring at me. lol
