I don’t like reading new books anymore

I used to be such an avid reader until about a year ago. I’d always be reading something and would always go to the book store when I went out. I don’t know what happened but I don’t think I’ve read more than 5 books this year and all of them I’d already read before. I’ve tried reading new books but I always get so damn distracted and bored and quit before chapter 2. Is this a phase (like when you do something so much you need a break from it for a while to build up enthusiasm again) or has the Internet made me dumb?

The internet is doing this to most people. It's hard to get back into the habit when you're used to the constant bombardment of immediate gratification and entertainment. What I do to fight against it is always carry a book with me, and when I'm waiting for class or the bus or whatever, read instead of mess around on my phone. It gets a lot of reading in. Find a book that seems genuinely engaging to you and do that until you're hooked.

It's not internet, it's people that tend to be idiots. Internet is, in fact, the biggest library ever. If you don't read it's your own fault.

        Good point, Pussy_Destroyer_69.
There is a lot to read online; the internet offers us more information and access to books than ever before. However, the internet also offers us youtube, reddit, pinterest, isitnormal.com, etc. These things offer more instant gratification and appeal to most people. It is up to the individual to change their habits, obviously. But I wouldn't say failing to read enough means you are an idiot. If it does, at least it doesn't make you rude.

As far as wether or not reading is important, that's a whole topic in itself and not what OP is asking.

Yea, I know it's a bit of a tangent but it's an interesting topic.
I'm not saying people are idiots for not reading. In fact I hate books. The thing is that the people in general stay in a superficial level. I'm sure there's quality TV on air, but a lot of people prefer to see the Kardashians and all that shit.

I tend to gravitate towards older works. I'm generally not keen on the contemporary style of writing. I can tell you three works I have liked, The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling. The follow up, The Silkworm, I found too grisly and had to stop reading. Both are murder mystery. Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling - it takes a bit of time to for it to suck you in but once you're in, you're in and you can't put it down. It's adult fiction. There's zero magic. The third is Uprooted by Kim Novak. This is an adult fantasy. It's based on Eastern European folklore, the author is EE. It doesn't follow most of the typical tropes. There were some things I disliked but, I recommend it highly.

I like Yukio Mishima's work, I'm reading The Sound of Waves right now, which is a beautiful coming of age romance; Emily Brontë's only known work, Wuthering Heights, and Virginia Woolf's Orlando. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Lester is another you might like.

I've gone through this, too. I think that you grew tired of it even though your interest in it had sustained for a long time. But your interest or passion will be re-lit later on? I don't know. :)

Books are a waste of time.

The intelligence that reading instills in your brain falls apart when you stop reading. At least read news magazines if books don't work for you.

Plenty of people don't read books at all. How does it mean your brain is dying? What does that even mean?

Same with me, I love re reading my old books, but just cant get in touch with new ones. Guess I was too addictive to the books series in the past, I read and rered them and didnt give other books a chance, now I can only enjoy the series I used to like then but just cant get myself to be in touch with other new book series or stand alone books...

Spending too much time on the internet destroyed my attention span. Nowadays, I carry a dumb phone and don't go online every day and I can focus on books again.

  • Try a different type of books. Assuming you read fiction, I suggest non-fiction. For example science. You can find endless amounts of books which approach specific topics and they permanently add knowledge to it, from basic to expert and even researching for brand new content recently discovered.

Don’t worry about it too much. Maybe the books you read were so satisfying, that new books can’t make the cut. Think of it as a high and the books are a drug. You already got to “that good shit” and now “that weak shit” won’t get you high. Now, out of frustration you are blaming a (mostly) honest and (kind of) innocent media source: the internet.

Where's "books are an inferior medium" option? Also it's not that bad, we read a lot every day without even noticing.

  • You need to decide on a genre and follow that path. Reading entertaining or interesting things will get you hooked again.
