I don't get why people tell you to go to therapy

Maybe I just didn't go to any good ones (I went to the ones that were free for college students) but they seriously just tell you things you could have found through a simple google search. How are they actually supposed to help you? What they say essentially just breaks down to "get over it" wrapped in a bunch of patronising bullshit.

Am I doing something wrong or is this pretty accurate?

Ultimately that is what therapy is. A way for you to "get over it" in a safe environment with the aide of a professional. If you can't do it alone in your head, or with the help of loved ones, then therapy is the next step.

Buy a motorcycle, hit the road. Do what you love, help people along the way especially in little ways like building a homeless camp (shelter) in the woods where another can find peace and solitude from judging eyes. Don’t leave anything behind as to who built it, and only take the satisfaction of knowing that you helped someone who doesn’t have to sleep on the ground, or might be inspired to go that extra step to build there own shelter next time. The world will start looking better. I know.

I've found counselling to be like that. It might help a little, but ultimately you realise it isn't actually going to solve anything. Which ends up making you feel more alone.

Therapy is to help you help yourself and talk it out with someone in private with professional training unrelated to your personal or professional life. There are many kinds of therapy and figuring out which one is best for your specific issue is important. There is a difference between therapy and counseling, but the point isn't condesencion. It also isn't always going to be a good fit. The very best therapy I ever got was from my wife and it was mostly common sense mixed with kindness and self motivated research. You gotta do what works for you though and nobody can tell you if it's working but you.

What kinda therapy is best for you depends on what kinda issues you're struggling with.

I guess it depends on what you class as therapy. Therapy can take many forms.

Therapy on its own won't do shit, you have to train your brain to think in a certain way. They can listen and teach you some methods but they can't do it for you. You do also have to have a trusting relationship with your therapist for it to help in any way.

There are fast easier ways to "get over it", there are harder slower ways to "get over it", and there are ways to make it worse. They should get you directed to the best way out of your mental maze.
