I don't like professors/teachers who try to make their courses "fun"

I simply do not like it when professors/teachers try to "spice" up their courses by making it look so "exciting and fun". For instance, one of my professors acts so upbeat and rowdy when talking to the point where it's so difficult to catch what he's saying, and another who makes parts of the lectures all swanky and such. I prefer professors who make their courses attention-drawing, but plain and easy to understand. I'm there to take notes and revise, not to play a game. I'm not a boring person, but I really dislike lectures that emphasize exuberance and such, rather than emphasizing learning. The only exception to this is language learning courses: I loved how my Spanish teacher made the course "fun", but for courses like sciences, I prefer them to be serene and about learning. Is this normal of me to feel this way?

I completely agree with you. If the subject's interesting, I'm fascinated even if the speaker's just lecturing calmly about it. If it's dull, no amount of antics will make me find it interesting.

On the other hand, maybe it's not really the fault of the teacher. He or she probably went into the subject out of love but soon learned that the only way to get some dim-wits to shut up and pay attention in class was to tap-dance while juggling and reciting the periodic table of the elements. They'd probably be just as happy to have a good discussion about enzyme kinetics or population genetics or all those other interesting things.

  • By the way, when I say "fun", I don't mean interesting. I LOVE interesting courses. I mean as in the "yaay games fun fun fun happy joy and you get a prize and you get a prize" ish thing that overdoes it.

I guess, to each their own. I like my lessons to be fun. I have a hard time not staying focused as it is. I can't stand someone boring.

You sound like a wet blanket that takes everything WAYYY too seriously. Learn to loosen up.

I wish this were a joke...Then I would tell you to keep writing and one day your jokes will be funny. Sadly...I can't do that here. You hate that someone is so passionate about something that they will go to very creative measures to make it interesting to others?

Do me a favor. Don't ever tell anyone that you "aren't a boring person." Because that is a lie. Note to you. Science is amazing. The best part of science is that it can and does pertain to everything we do EVERY DAY. Ever seen mythbusters? Science is the easiest class to make fun. And if you keep crapping on teachers that do enjoy what they're doing I can only hope you get the hopeless teachers who only read from power points and that hate their jobs. Those are the teachers that suck. Teachers that realized "too late" that they chose to wrong profession and are too lazy to pursue another profession that they may actually enjoy or be good at.

    Encourage creativity...don't crap on it.

I study music, so even though my lecturers take everything seriously, it never feels much like work to me.

Maybe they're just so passionate about science that it explodes from every orifice of their being. Try going along with it, or find out what your realistic options are, since starting somewhere else will be expensive.

My thoughts are if you're not having fun, you're not learning. xxx

Meh, I can kinda see what you mean. My German teacher in high school kinda took the fun side way too far, and I didn't really learn a whole lot of German in her class. :/

On the other hand my favorite professor now is my painting teacher, and he's pretty wild. He gets really into going on about painting, classes where he's doing lecture you can expect him to get excited and ramble on quite a bit; don't even ASK him what one of his paintings means if you don't have 15 minutes to kill.

It really just depends on how far they take it and how good a teacher they are before factoring that in.

Some times teachers try to make their coarses easier to learn for the majoraty but i agree with you it sucks if you just want a normal teacher

If it comes naturally to them, it's fine but if they're trying too hard then I hate it too.

Have you tried telling them how you feel? I'm sure they'd appreciate the feedback and can apart their style to be more beneficial to you :P

There's a good chance some of them feel the same way you do.
