I don't mind people using "slurs" as long as it's not used offensively

I don't really mind if someone uses some word that is thought of as "derogatory" as long as it is not used as in an offensive way. For example, how people use the word "nigga" in rap songs. Personally, I am Chinese and I have heard of people using words defined as slurs in a non-offensive jest, and I personally do not feel offended by that at all, as long as it is not used in an offensive manner. I only get offended if it is used in an offensive manner. So stuff like "Lol I love your little chinky eyes" would feel strange but it wouldn't hurt me, but if people stuff like "Fucking chinks I hope you all burn in hell" I might chase after them with flaming pitchforks.

tl;dr: I don't really feel offended by people using "slurs" as long as the person in question saying it isn't using it to insult.

Is it normal?

Slurs are just offensive when people allow it to be so.

If you call a black person a 'nigger' (which would be a fucked up thing to do) it immediately offends them because it makes them think back to a time when they were used as slaves. However, 'they' were not slaves, their forefathers were. So they are getting angry at a word that makes them think back to a time when they didn't even exist yet. But somehow it hurts.

Why is it that people allow a single word to upset and enrage them?

The term is offensive to them because it was used to demean them based off their skin color. And when you use the word in that manner it is a racial slur. It shouldn't matter if they were born after the slavery generation, it still is a word used to degrade someone based on race.

    • Niggers still exist, now not all black people are in fact niggers. But plenty of niggers are still out there.

Perfectly normal. I'm bisexual, and a friend of mine calls me a fag all the time, like a term of endearment. I love it.

Me and my friends call ourselves (and pretty much everyone else) faggots, but not in a mean way, it's just a funny word...

I am the same as you are, I don't get why people would react so harshly to slurs if it isn't said in an offensive manner.

You're likely in the minority with that opinion, but I'd agree that a world where people would bother contextualizing things sounds wonderful.
