I don't understand comment karma!

Is this normal? I made an account and I'm only allowed to make one comment every 24 hours. When I try to make a second comment I receive a message informing me I need to improve my "comment karma". How am I supposed to accomplish that when I can only make one comment per day?
In fact, my comment karma won't allow me to reply to comments made on my own post!

I noticed there are other new users who are able to immediately start making lots of comments after creating their account. By hovering the mouse-cursor over their username, it tells you how long they've been a member (example: new user for 3 hours). Then looking at that profile, it shows 20 comments have been made within the last 3 hours. Meaning: that new user doesn't have comment karma.

The F.A.Q.s don't explain anything about how this system works for new members or why.

  • I am not a fan of this whole karma rating thing. All this does is give the power to silence people if they do not conform to the politically correct opinions. If IIN is going to make it possible for you to get a limited amount of comment postings due to what "others" think about your opinions, for numerous reasons, then I just see IIN going downhill from there.

I thought IIN was a place where your opinion is valued no matter from what perspective, however if it's going to make it possible for people to be limited in what they can say based on what "other" people think, then I am disapointed.

Not to mention, how would this effect those that are targeted by thumbs down trolls?

You know, I stopped using the thumb feature (unless if something was funny rather than a perspective on an issue) because I couldn't be assed with the whole "popularity dictates accuracy", but now I think I should probably just upvote every comment I see regardless of if I agree or not just to ensure people are less likely to be given a limited amount of commenting capabilities.

I completely agree with this. At this point a lot of people are just using it to screw with people. Many of the trolls got a hold of it.

It's a necessary evil. This site has a ton of content submitted every day and there has to be some way to keep it on topic and somewhat clean. I can't have someone moderate every comment. This karma system is very lenient. It will only really affect the full on spammers and troublemakers. I believe that anyone that participates in this community in good faith, whether their opinions are politically correct or not, should have no trouble with it at all. If anyone believes that they're being unfairly affected by it, then can contact me and I'll gladly investigate. Thanks.

      • Hmm. I am still iffy on it. I would have troll posts and spammers if it involved people not at risk of their politically incorret views being the result of them not being able to contribute to posts with their perspective. However, if it is due to not being able to go through all of the posts due to limited moderation, I suppose I can see why, even if I see it as being something a bit bad. If you're leaving it open for people to contact you to remedy the situation they may get in unfairly, then I suppose it "could" help, but surely there are other methods to reach the same ends to get rid of trouble makers and spammers?

Why not have a rating system on profiles? One which informs you of people with negative scores. Each month or two months, or so on, you check the list, investigate those users, and if they are spammers or are just causing trouble for the sake of causing trouble and not just their opinions being politically incorrect, you can limit their capability to be involved in the community? I think it would be safer for the users and be easy for you as a moderator? :)

Looks like there was an issue with your IP address. I've tweaked things and you should be ok going forward.

The situation you describe can happen when many accounts are created with the same IP address. It's effective at hampering the activities of particularly annoying members. IP address detection isn't a perfect art though and sometimes there are mixups.
