I don't want to go to this college cause i don't want to take a class

I'm thinking about majoring in English when I go away to college, and I have a few colleges in mind- but there are some I don't want to go to, specifically because I don't want to take some classes I've required to take. For example, in one college, I'm required to take a foreign language- and I HATE taking a foreign language, and a physical science (I'm terrible at physical science classes).

So, is it normal that I suddenly don't want to go to certain colleges because I don't want to take certain classes- classes that I know that I'll struggle in, and won't do well in?

Perhaps a trade school would be beneficial since there is a glut on the market of college graduates. Or join the United States Navy where various PRACTICAL skills are taught AND you get paid for taking them.

Maybe, you can go abroad? Find a college that suits you.

I can understand that. In my country, you choose what you want to study and that's the only thing you study. There are no minors or options or electives. Also, the courses are quite narrow. For instance you could solely study Corrosion Control Engineering, Forensic Egyptology, or Intellectual Property Law, and that is all you would ever study.

It produces specialists (who then can't find jobs in their specialisms). Your system seems to promote a more holistic approach. While you may not like it, it is a better way of doing things and gives you a grounding in things you may later need to fall back on.

It is normal. However, many students do have subjects which they are required to take whether or not they want to.

Are you afraid of work? Are you aware that throughout life we are required to do many things we don't want to? A close study of a foreign language will help you to better understand how the English language works. If you are thinking about pursuing a future in teaching, your attitude toward learning needs to change.

    • No, I'm not going to be a teacher.

I'm not afraid to work, I just don't want to be forced to take a class I know I'm going to fail regardless of how much work and effort I put into it.

Check your college's curriculum. Not all require the 4 different "core" classes. I didn't have to take ANY language, and only remedial English (bc I was in a science field). But I had to take multiple "inernational", "multicultural", and "writing intensive" classes, though there was a list for each as long as it added up to the required hours... But I got to pick and ended up loving them! (mythology, anthropology, and safety were a few I took).

So, do some research, you may not ever have to TOUCH those classes you dislike!

You could also choose something more specific than an English degree to avoid those general classes. Want to teach? Get a K-12 Education degree. Analyst? One for that too. Interpreter, language or behavioral studies, even History of English language. Colleges have everything (Ohio State will make a curriculum for you if they dont have a degree you want from a different college!)

  • Ugh! I feel your pain. I have to take two foreign language classes as well to get my degree. I wish I could avoid them, but I think I'm going to do the classes during the summer months when I have nothing else to focus on but learning a new language. I know I won't do well, but there's no getting around it for me.
