I find it annoying when people make useless complaints in my house

- I wear a hat in my house

Them: You're not supposed to wear a hat in the house.

- I have game consoles, video games, and FNAF plushies on the living room shelves.

Them: You're not supposed to own those. You're too old.

- I have Purple room walls

Them: You're not supposed to have a wall that colour. Paint it something else.

- I pour the milk before cereal.

Them: You're not supposed to do that.

I've been having this issue for years now. I figure since I'm the co-owner of the house and pay half the mortgage I can do whatever I want, but visitors still complain about things. is it normal
that I find it annoying?

I'd never comment on someone else's house if I hadn't first been asked for my opinion. I'd definitely observe and judge, but I wouldn't say anything.

What those people are doing is obnoxiously arrogant. It's your house, and that gives you the right to follow whatever decorative scheme you choose, keep whatever stuff you want in it and arrange it however you please. Since your choices have zero impact on their lives, they have no right to object to them or tell you that you should do things differently.

I don't know where you live, but I've commented here before on how an awful lot of Americans seem to believe that they have a constitutional right to criticise people - even total strangers - for behaviour that they don't agree with, even when it cannot possibly affect them and it's really none of their damn business. I suspect that's partly a result of the profoundly self-centred nature of American society, and partly a belief that the right of freedom of expression means you never need to think about the consequences of whatever crap you choose to spew.

Some people are just dicks. Usually, we have a choice about whether or not we spend any time with annoying asshats. When we're obliged for some reason to spend time with them, we still have a choice: we can pay attention to what they say and take it aboard, or we can dismiss everything they say as the babbling of a fool.

Those kinds of things don't bother me.

I have on rare occasion pointed out what I considered a dangerous or hazardous situation, with an offer to assist them to make it safer. I've been thanked for that.

Lots of people complain I know about my room having lots of band posters saying I'm edgy. In the end those useless complaints never bothered me.

Very normal! I also find it a bit rude. It's none of their business how you decorate or live in your house as long as you're not hurting anyone.

I live in a very "dated" house, which I happen to love the look of. I've always been a fan of the '60s-'70s decor. I have had SO many people give me unsolicited advice about remodeling it, despite saying several times that I like it the way it is. I don't like the modern grayscale/black and white minimalist look at all, and don't understand why some people think I need to remodel my house in that style just to "keep up with the Joneses" or increase the value when I don't plan to sell anytime in the near future (if ever; but can't I just cross that bridge when I get there if I do decide to sell? What's the point in remodeling a house in a way I don't like years or even decades before selling, especially if that style will probably be considered outdated by the time that day comes? I just bought the house a little over a year ago, absolutely love it, and HATE moving).

I noticed that once I got my own place, people began treating it as if it was theirs and trying to persuade me to do everything their way. 🙄

I also still have a bunch of stuff I've been told to get rid of, despite it having sentimental value to me. Much of it is my saddles, my old horses' halters and bridles, etc. I don't ride anymore, but those things bring back a lot of memories and I enjoy giving them the occasional clean and condition/oil, plus they will come in handy if the day comes I return to riding. They're not costing me anything to keep, so why not? Some of that stuff plus some photos and trophies/ribbons are all I have left of my horses as well besides the memories, so they're irreplaceable, not to mention with how the quality of so much has severely downgraded over the years, it would be extremely hard and very expensive to replace it with the same quality.

I have a 30-year-old console CRT TV, VCR, and DVD player I love and use regularly as well, but have been told many times to throw away and replace with a flat screen and streaming service. Why? I have everything I like to watch on VHS or DVD, and the TV still works great (and doubles as a nice shelf! It is wood encased and looks really nice in my bedroom because it matches the woodwork, IMO).

There are also certain things I do differently than others, that I get lots of unsolicited advice and opinions on as well. I've just learned to let it go through one ear and out the other, though I do find it annoying and rude, especially when it comes to my property. Some people need to learn to mind their own business!
