I hate it when people mention celebrity names

I haven't watched a movie in months. I don't know who all these celebrities are that people (especially Matt) keep referring to. Does it make them feel worldly and knowledgeable to know all these useless names? I hate that shit.

I have a related pet peeve, which is people talking about movies in terms of actor rather than character names. I only know the names of the very biggest stars, so most of the time I have no idea what they're talking about. But even if I do it just sounds silly to talk about "Tom Cruise" stuck in a time warp or whatever. It makes it sounds like they can't distinguish fiction from reality.

Just exactly how would you expect people to communicate their thoughts about a particular celebrity with you if you don't use their names?
Would the conversation go something like this; "Hey, you know that actor that was in that movie, you know the one with the short brown hair and a few day's beard, you know."
    "Who?"
"You know, that one I really like."
    "Johnny....?"
"Oh god, don't use his name, or I'll think you worldly and knowledgeable."
"You mean instead of ignorant and strange?"
