I have a fear of watching my dogs eat!

Ever since I saw my dog choke on a piece of food, I am terrified of them choking again. I do feed them obviously, but I can't be in the same room when they eat or if they are chewing anything. I have never heard of anything like this before, and I was wondering if anybody feels the same or could diagnose my phobia. I would feel much more normal if my phobia had a name. Thanks

I'd be afraid NOT to watch my dog it after something like that! To save his life

That is a good point. They don't care about the dog dying, they just don't want to see it die.

  • It should pass in time, it would be equivalent to a parent feeling apprehensive of a baby having choked on something recently.

Your compassion for your dogs is admirable, despite what some idiots would say.

Did this happen because your dog ate too fast? Look into this special type of bowl called the "brake-fast bowl" its special designed to slow down a dogs eating pattern and help stop choking and bloat.

Can't help with the name of the phobia, but... I can certainly understand why you are fearful of them choking since they did once. I would think that instead of staying away while they are eating that you would want to be near them to be sure they don't choke again and if they do, you can help them. It would kill me if something happened to my dog like choking on food and I wasn't there to help him. Is it really the fear of him choking again, or perhaps the fear that you won't know what to do if he does?? You can talk to your vet who will be more than happy to demonstrate to you how to help him should it happen.
