I have a problem with touching

I have a problem with people touching me. I get really crept out whenever anyone makes any kind of physical contact. It makes me uncomfortable just having people stand close to me. They don’t even have to be strangers, they can be family or friends, I just get nervous and break out in a sweat when people come too close and my skin crawls whenever someone touches it. Am I a freak?

    • I'm baffled every time I meet couples walking with arms around each other. How do they pull it off?

Its because they love each other, and enjoy one another's touch.

I get annoyed if I'm touched too much. Say like some people do the comfort thing and might rub a spot over and over.... that irritates me. I cant stand one spot being being agitated like that.

My brother is like this some people just feel uncomfortable with it. He hates hugs but sometimes he'll hug you if you open your arms nice and wide but he does a kind of one armed pat thing when you do it's pretty funny but sometimes we make a joke of it and we'll all just start a big family group hug around him and all start saying "awwwww" really loudly and over the top and it's always very funny hahahah he doesnt mind when we do that he thinks its funny too. And also I feel like maybe it makes it easier for him because there are so many people in the embrace that hes too surrounded by loving hugs to overthink anything theres just no room to be awkward about it because hes just squished in between us, I think he secretly likes when we do that :))

    • I don't think you're making it easier for him, you're going to suffocate the innocent boy.

Rather or not this is normal depends on if you have a logical reason for it or if it's just an irrational fear. I have Asperger's (High-functioning autism) and don't like people touching me because sensory issues are a part of my condition. The nervous system of autistic people is different and we are often more (or in rarer cases, less) sensitive to touch and other sensories. Autistic people also get overwhelmed in crowds easily, so I tend to avoid parties where I know this will be a problem. If you can't find any other explanation, maybe getting yourself evaluated for learning and developmental disabilities would be a good idea. There's lots of conditions like Asperger's, Sensory processing disorder, even ADHD, that can cause problems being around other people. You can be smart and still have these conditions too. It wasn't discovered I had Asperger's until I was almost 18 because I was so high-functioning. I'm not saying you're definitely on some sort of spectrum, there are other possibilities, but this is just what your post reminded me of. No matter what the reasoning, remember that it's okay to have boundaries and need your space.

I really hate it when people hug me. It feels awkward and wrong (unless I initiate it). I often flinch when people randomly place hands on my shoulders and such. Just really irks me out. So with that in mind, I think it is more normal than thought.

    • Well, my father used to whip me and my siblings with an electric cord when we were younger. According to him, the electric cord spanking was for disciplinary purposes. Does that have anything to do with the issues I have about touching?

It might but you might also have been molested. I took some child psychology classes and that's one of the effects from said abused. Children offten reject or avoide beeing touched by the person/ persons of the same gender as the person abusing them.

    • The problem is that most people simply don't understand that there are people who genuinely feel this way.
