Lucid dreaming is difficult to learn, so you should start off by understanding the dreams. Keep a dream diary by your bed and write them down as soon as you wake up. Then analyze them for correlations to your life. You can also program yourself to remember your dreams by telling yourself to before you go to sleep. Hope this helps.

Perhaps you should teach yourself how to lucid dream? Sometimes when I'm having nightmares, I can change the way the dream goes and turn it into something fun. I accidentally taught myself how to do it.

Lucid dreaming sounds really cool but I heard you could get sleep paralysis if you lucid dream too much.

Don't obsess over it. Remember that reality is worse than any nightmare you could have.

What do you do in the hour or so before you go to sleep, because that can affect your dreams

I thought so! That's a very bad idea if you want healthy sleep. It's now well known that spending time on any screen or even having them turned on in your bedroom will adversely affect your sleep patterns, something to do with your brain patterns - sorry I don't have a reference for you.

Try getting of all screens for at least an hour before you go to bed and turn of any screens in your bedroom and see if that works

Counselling? It could help with the memories: it sounds as if you're having flashbacks in your sleep
