I hide my southern accent

ive lived in kentucky my whole life and of course i picked up a southern accent. Not a really thick one but its noticable. I hate kentucky i fall in love with every other state i go to. I also hate southern accents so i try very hard to talk normally and hide mine, but when im angry or not paying attention it comes out. is it normal to despise and hide your own accent?

I like people with a southern accent because they make me feel comfortable, like I'm talking to someone down to earth and kind.

I'm from Texas and there's no hiding my accent. I too can sometimes get embarrassed by it... not because I hate it but because so many people seem to love it. Everyone sounds different and the grass is always greener...try not to let it bother you but if it becomes a problem then see a speech/vocal coach.

I lived in America for some time when I was a uni student and found when I came back home to Australia ppl thought I was hilarious cos I picked up this weird Aussie/American accent and spoke slower than normal and said "kawfee" all the time. I kinda miss it now though - made it fun to be different! Just try and accept who you are! There are worse things in life to stress about ;)

It shows where you come from, not where you're going. Even though you hate Kentucky, it's part of you.

I'm from kentucky too. I hate my country accent and I get made fun of sometimes :/ but I'm proud to be different so it doesn't bother me.

  • Same here, I'm from round Newcastle area and if I don't force myself to speak poshly, I end up sounding very Northern (which of course isn't bad at all XD) but I use all sorts of slang words, like "innit" and "wha ar ya doin?"

I can almost see my Uncle and Aunt's relatives (who seem to think they are posh) thinking I'm stupid.

But don't hide who you are, if people can't see past an accent, they simply aren't worth your time.

Aww, you got lucky with your accent. The Geordie accent has got to be the nicest of all the regional ones. I used to have a teacher from Jesmond and I always used to get her to explain things that I already knew just because I liked hearing her talk.

I thankfully outgrew the valley girl accent. But generally I don't have an accent. But I tend to pick up a few accented words from friends. Like "you betcha" and "donchaknow". But I have also found myself using words like wicked and brilliant more frequently as well.

The south does have a stigma, but not all southern accents are created equally. I have a hard time with New England accents, they often sound like they are always angry and in a bad mood.

Please, whatever you do. Do not put an "R" sound in the word "wash."

  • Ya hide yer southern accent? Golly that's kinda silly right there. Looks like you've been lettin' ya folks 'n' friends know that ya ain't not a southerner. Yeeha!

  • Many people in the north think the southern American accent sounds rather unintelligent, but that is probably just because alot of southerners use poor grammar (as do many northerners). Just use proper grammar and do not worry about having an accent. I love Kentucky.

People have told me I speak English very well. Although I want to punch them in the face when they say that. I do skip words sometimes when I am nervous, or say half my sentence in English and half in my native tongue. It does not happen often unless someone is asking my personal opinion abou something. I can communicate very well when dealing with facts but I am not used to being asked personal things, so when I am, I get nervous. It does not bother me, but, I know it could confuse some people.

I never realised that English wasn't your native tongue. Your posts are always flawlessly written.

I am from the islands I mostly grew up here in the states but my family still have there accents and I still picked it up lol I can easily switch back and forth from a Brooklyn accent to my countries but sometimes like you when I get upset or not paying attention or around other island people it slips out... But it turned out that it's not because of my family, but that I can pick up accents and dialects really easy....

I have a Mancunian accent which I often tone down for the same reasons. People from the north in general have the reputation of being stupid, workshy and uncivilised. Although posh people would never admit it, I'm sure they think I'm stupid. You can see it in their eyes whenever I open my mouth.
