I imagine myself having a conversation with someone in my head

I know I'm just ultimately talking to myself but for some reason I find myself imagining I'm talking to a friend or ex-girlfriend in my head and then imagining their response. I'll also imagine I'm writing an is it normal post (like this one). I'll imagine telling them updates in my life or just some random notable thing that had happened that day. I think I've done this for a long time but have never really paid close attention to it.

I told one girl I was dating that I would imagine having conversations with her in my head sometimes when she isn't there. She thought it was endearing but I'm starting to think that this is pretty weird?

I think it's normal to play out conversations in your head, it's when you start to think it's real that you cross the line into abnormal.

STOP DOING THIS! That was what I started doing before I developed psychosis and now I have a constant voice in my head that won't shut up, 50% of the day it will drive me insane, saying things that it knows will piss me off, it talks as though it's another person.

Seriously, stop it... I think when it becomes a habit your brain learns to do it and then it becomes a force of habit that you have no control over, when you become depressed or go mental it'll turn on you and start saying horrible things or questioning everything you do.

Example: You drop something. It'll call you an idiot and question your intelligence.

It could be that it's not what causes psychosis, but is a first sign symptom, the moment you start getting paranoid thoughts or thinking strangly about the world, go to a doctor and take the anti-psychotic meds.

Are you seriously suggesting that talking to oneself causes psychosis? I betcha it's the other way round

I do this all the time, especially when I'm bored. Sometimes when I'm home alone I'll pretend I'm having an interview with someone and talk out loud. Its embarrassing to me but I do it out of boredom/loneliness.

I already have the same issue you have but for another reason. I have OCD and I constantly have a voice in the back of my head telling me if I don't do certain things then bad things will happen. I have to follow a heavy routine every day and talking to myself helps (somehow) along with the loneliness/boredom Thanks for the heads up though.

It happens to me too, but it's not a conscious choice. The way I'm looking at it, it's the brain just being used to stimulation, and when it's "idle", it just starts to make stuff up.

I think it's normal, maybe almost inevitable, but I also see it as a sign that something is a bit off. If we would have a more balanced life-style, less over-stimulation, then I think we wouldn't experience so much internal chatter. Our brain could handle the quietness better, which would probably have good effects on our mental state.

I hope it's normal because I do it all the time: fortunately I live alone so I can do it out loud if I want to and the dog likes it because she thinks I'm talking to her

I HAVE read your comment and responded to it. I do not believe talking to oneself causes psychosis, it's the other way round.
