I lied about my age online until i was 21
I'm 25 now, but ever since when I was under 21, I always lied about my age when signing up for websites. I joined facebook when I was 11 and said I was born in 1985. I was really born in 1996. I have never changed my birthday on facebook because I don't want them to get suspicious or security check me. I did this with websites until I turned 21 unless the site seemed like it wouldn't make a big deal about it.
I don't think it's right for websites or laws to say you have to be 13, 18, 21 etc. to sign up. I took serious offence at that. My belief is that if you can't change it, nobody should be able to discriminate against you for it. You can't change your age, birth gender or race. People get pissed when they are treated as sub-citizens for being transgender, gay, black, etc. but they seem to think ageism is acceptable. I get that children's safety must be protected, but some of the laws are just unnecessary.
If a child really wants to join a website, they can just lie and never reveal their age. You can't completely stop children from seeing the online world. I saw porn for the first time when I was around 6 or 7 and was cursing before I started kindergarten. If a child really wants to see or do something they will find a way. This is what happened with me.
I feel very sorry for the 14 year old whose post was deleted today. The world has always had it's problems but people just can't change this ageism thing. God, help society change.
