I'm a grown man but house centipedes scare the living **** out of me

Just around a year ago I noticed centipedes in my basement. In case you don't know about them they look something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1RjiiH_GdA

I realize they are harmless, but I am still absolutely terrified of them. I find them in my basement at times and once one appeared in my room. I am too scared to go into my basement because they almost always show up there.

Is this normal for a man?

    • I'm in the Toronto area. House centipedes came from the mediterranean and were brought over by immigrants, and now are found across North America.

Which Southern state? I used to live in Mississippi and I've never seen one of those things.

        • Galveston Island, Texas. Centipedes are all over the place. You are lucky you have not encountered one. They freak me out. When I lived in Washington I remember there being tons in gardens. I use to catch them and make them fight spiders and beetles and shit.

Whoa, I never thought about them back when I lived in Katy, Texas. I did see a normal looking one near swimming pool at my apartment complex in Clinton, Mississippi. It grossed me out. I've heard they were poisonous but I dunno.

So do they have those freaky looking ones like OP is talking about in Galveston?

            • Yeah. Centipedes can be found almost anywhere. I don't see them too often, but I know that they are around. I recently read an article about possibly using centipede venom to make a new generation of pain killers. It was surprising to say the least.
