I'm about to start my book but i'm confused...paper or 'puter?

I'm compiling some crap I have thunk up over the years and am about to write it into some form of a book so's I can get paid.

Here's my dilemma, I don't know whether to write it on paper or on the computer. Can I do both? But what if I forget stuff or the computer eats my work? Then again what if a torando comes and blows away my papers?

I'm not really a fan of writing on the computer but I also have a bad hand disease that makes writing by hand painful after too long. BUT....I can carry around paper, though, not my computer. So that's convenient.

So confused. (serious, btw, please help, it's my first novel)

Computer!! 19
Paper!! 4
Both!! 15
Other (what then?) 4
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Both, but use the computer as your primary storage and transcribe anything you hand-write to the computer. Back up locally and also into the cloud.

    Hello there!

I'm a professional contemporary fiction author (it's my job) and I recommend using a laptop, Macbook®, Apple Macintosh®, home computer or other type of electronic doohickey with a word processor - if you're with Microsoft, word is my personal favourite).

I carry a hand-held digital Olympus recorder in my bag, for documenting interesting things whilst out and about; for interview transcripts; sudden inspiration (too good to miss!) and for recording conversations as a key to honing fabulous diaglogue.

And having a little spiral-bound notebook handy (I have millions of the things - by my bed, on my desk, in my bag, you name it!) to capture that 'emergency' prose!

So to wind it all off, I'd suggest writing the majority of your magnum opus on a word processor - not forgetting notebooks for any of that extra magic you happen to conjure up!

Before I go - I offer advice and help for writers free of charge, a little pick-me-up when you need a bit of outside inspiration.
All you need to do to get started is reply! I'd be more than happy to help you from there, my friend!

    _____ _________, contemporary fiction author.

    Good luck!

    xx

get a laptop, then you can bring it everywhere like paper and have the convenience of having it typed! if you are scared of the computer eating your work, keep a flash drive in the usb and save to the hard drive and flash drive every time so if one goes down you have the other

Hm... that's a tough one. I find it the easiest to write in public, but I never take my laptop with me to a coffee shop, since that makes me look like a douche.

I usually write stuff down on paper, in little notebooks, and I type it out later.

There's no right or wrong here, so pick what works best for you.

Computer. Definatly computer because if you plan on publishing it they're going to want it typed. I've written 470 pages of a novel before, by hand. Never gotten if finished. All of them pages became such a hassle. A few of them fell out, some of them got mislocated in the book (don't know how that happened) and then, to top it all off, I had to transfer to the computer anyways. After all that I had written. Take it from someone who knows, if you are taking it seriously, and you want to get it published, the computer is ALWAYS your best bet. Best of luck to you!

I would proceed on the computer, with several different backup locations for safe keeping!

All the people I know who write write on paper first then type it up on the computer so they can have it in both forms. After a little while on the computer you'll probably get used to it and find it to be as preferential as handwriting, and if carrying it around is an issue, you could use a laptop or a netbook.

You should write notes and the likes on paper, and keep it safe, maybe write a few paragraphs, keep finials on the computer, and hey, maybe upload on the wattpad? Its great for feedback and if your story is good enough it might get noticed and published!

I'm love wrighting in my spare time.
computer is the best way, ihave tried paper but is sucks because I have a tentency to go back to my previous work and edit or, ad entire chapters and i cant do that on paper unless I rewright it thousands of times. like may I was never taught how to tipe so i just use two fingers (one from each hand) like a 3 year old, so i am slow but it's stil much better that paper.
    go for computer.
