I have awful breath at times, and when I'm talking on the phone with someone I have this fear that they can smell my horrendous halitosis through the telephone.

The speaker part of the phone stinks. I feel it's like something from the Matrix where my breath ripples through the telephone wires and attacks people on the receiving end and they have to do like Neo and dodge my breath vapors like bullets.

This is so crippling that I don't answer the phone unless I have to. Then again sometimes I will call people I don't like and hope this fear is true and they are gagging from my foul mouth odors.

is it normal to fear that people can smell your breath over the phone?

    Phones can't transfer smell, just voices. I think your paranoia is a bit irrational.

    Its just your breath bouncing back at you of the fone that causes this fear. Go on loudspeaker that might help

    oh horribilus, one boss i had had that, he was so nice too us girls felt bad no one could get close to him, do something anything, change your diet completely live off peppermint leaves, i do hope your joking tho

    You've got nothing to worry about. The only thing they will receive is your voice. They won't smell your breath.

    It may be an irrational fear to think people can smell your breath over the phone but I don't think it's uncommon for people to brush their teeth before talking on the phone. I can't make calls before I've brushed my teeth.

    Well have you ever smelled the persons breath over the phone when you talked to them? no? you got nothing to worry about. This is nothing but paranoia.

    Why not just brush your teeth, go to the dentist, and just all around regularly take care of your mouth/teeth so you dont cause people to tear up just by being downwind of your breath?

    Seems like a good idea, no?

    I couldn't help but chuckle :O

    This reminds me of when people say that they wish they could reach through the phone to straggle/kick someone's ass. You're being paranoid. Phones thankfully can't transfer smells and if they could I'm sure by now that one of your friends would've told you the truth.
