I'm ashamed of believers and atheists equally?

I've been an atheist since I was 13, but I find religion an interesting topic. And researching it on the internet or talking about it with others has made me find that both parties are unaccepting of the other and it makes me feel ashamed that people are so closed minded because of 'fact' (whatever they find it to be). I believe God is real for those who believe, but I think people who would mess that up...something someone else's life is based around because they think they're the stronger party is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. I even got shunned for applying a few Buddhist elements into my lifestyle when I was doing science at uni, I was called a hippie and other things. And it makes me feel like I don't want to believe in anything at all...just that the world is here and that people came to be on it by coincidence. IIN?

I'm not sure what you mean by God being real for people who believe; objectively, either God either exists or doesn't.

I totally agree with you about people who take pleasure in bashing other people's beliefs though. I don't see where they get off attacking someone else's belief system. It's cruel to try and take something away from someone that makes them happy and hurts no-one.

I don't know if my experience is representative, but from what I've seen many atheists are not anti-theist and many theists are not anti-atheist. Don't shy away from your beliefs simply because some people who share them behave in a bad way.

i think i put it wrong. what i meant is that not everyone has to think god isn't real, or vice versa. just that if they believe he is then that should be fine. that's what i was trying to say.

I agree. I believe in God but I dislike both hypocritical Christians and militant atheists who say believing in a deity is stupid.

I don't know what atheists believe, but it's my understanding that they DON'T believe in the existence of God.
I do know that Christians claim to believe the teachings of Jesus. If all of us Christians FOLLOWED the teachings of Jesus we would, (1) love God with all of our heart and mind and body and strength; I don't think most people would have a problem with that, and (2) we would love our neighbor as ourself. This means that we wouldn't treat our neighbor the way he treats us, even if he treats us bad. We wouldn't treat him the way we think he deserves to be treated because of what he does or doesn't do or believe. It means that WHATEVER way we would want people to treat us we would treat them the same way regardless of ANYTHING about them that makes them different from us.
I think if most Christians actually followed the teachings of Jesus we wouldn't have to spend so much time and energy preaching and converting because most people would want what we have.
Personally, I'm not perfect. I'm a growing Christian that's been forgiven.
If anybody doesn't have what I have I feel like I wish I could share it with them because they might like it, sort of like I wish I could share my favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream with them because if they tried it they might like it, but I'm not going to shove it down their throat.

Yeah I know what you mean. Listening to Christians and atheist argue is fucking annoying. I hate hearing oh your stupid since my belief is right or oh you are stupid since my belief is right. We could all be wrong and than who will be laughing?

We will all feel like fools and dick-holes. I think instead of fighting we should find a logical solution that explains everything in the world. Not automatically say "Oh that's stupid because It sounds retarded" or "Oh that's wrong since I choose not to believe in it".

This method is very stupid. Simply closing yourself off to one end because you believe your side is always right makes you a fool. There is always a logical explanation but people will never see that. They just sit around and spread there idiocy across the planet.

But im agnostic so anything I believe is going to be bashed by both sides. So fuck all of you. Have your idiotic war.

all these different debates, arguments, differences have made it all so confusing, really. while if you look for the very basic terms of both sides they're so simple and easy! it has all been made complicated by people only.

I also agree to your point where you say each side tries to offend the other, tries to enforce their view on other and they even look down upon the other party! and its absolutely not right. I don't really know why people offend each other for this difference when they know that if the other is believing on that one thing so firmly only then is he sticking to it and he is not a jerk or anything else and continuously fighting won't really help .The strangest part is that more than following our belief and living accordingly we just keep on arguing and fighting.

while almost all religions and beliefs have different points to present they all encourage peace which we are distorting.
any belief it is ,it is we who have created these complications. it would have been possible without it and far more better actually.
so yeah! I can understand why you and so many like you are getting away from these matters because most of us get so trapped in these difference that it becomes so hectic and confusing so we choose to skip out of it and stay away and live a simpler life. :p
hope you get what I said. :p

  • I know exactly what you mean too

  • I know what you mean, they treat the topic of religion like it's a war. Though I tend to get involved when one side bullies the other too much, or when one side flails superiority, or when a side shows excessive "pity" to the other.
