I'm obsessed with social media?

I constantly look for new followers, subscribers, likes, comments, and everything else. I'm absolutely obsessed! That's all I ever do now, compare myself to others and feel bad about myself. When I don't get the likes then I get depressed and question myself.

Unfortunately, what you say doesn't surprise me. Researchers have found strong evidence that high levels of engagement with social media is likely to lead to depression.

You may know on an intellectual level that what you're see on social media is a carefully curated version of people's lives where all the highs are exaggerated, the boring stuff isn't mentioned at all, and the shitty stuff is only used to get pity-likes (or to point people to a GoFundMe page). But the way our brains are wired means that - just as happens with a good movie or a well-written book - we _feel_ that what we see on social media is reality. Combine that with the fact that social media is designed to make us feel that we personally know vastly more people than we would ordinarily call friends, and you end up with a situation where we're confronted with evidence that perhaps hundreds of people we feel we "know" are all having an amazing life, while ours is just a steady stream of boring days, disappointments and failures.

It's just not the reality, dude, and the recent Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie saga proves that. As far as all of her followers knew, she was living the dream. That's the image she chose to present because she was savvy enough to know that the unvarnished truth of her life simply wouldn't gain and retain an audience. But what was actually going on in her head and in that little van she shared with Laundrie was much darker, and it's very possible we'll never really understand just how grim it was to be her.

As you clearly understand, this fixation of yours is clearly not beneficial to you, and you need to break free of social media. It's always challenging to escape addiction - and that is what you seem to have. I can only assume that the time you spend on social media is supplying some need you have, be that a need to feel engaged with others or just a way to escape your own life. Maybe going cold-turkey and just deleting all your accounts and apps is the best way for you to go. Or maybe you need to focus on finding some other activity that will take up so much of your time and leave you feeling so engaged with the real world that you can finally truly see that social media is fake, shallow and pointless.

You should delete whatever social media app you use and try to spend more time going outside or talking to people. I've been down that same rabbit hole before in the past and it will make you absolutely miserable if you don't take time to distance yourself from social media.

Try to pick up some kind of hobby to keep yourself entertained or at least try to socialize with people in the real world more instead of focusing on your addiction.

You don't even need to stop using social media entirely, but taking a break from time to time will be great for your mental health.

Solid advice, social media addiction doesn’t lead anywhere good. I would add that OP should get one of those apps that kicks you off Instagram and other social media apps after a certain time.

Likes on social media do not mean anything to me.

You'll be better off by getting off there.

I'm also obsessed with Social Media...

So obsessed about staying of of it that I might check my accounts every other month (they exist so past acquaintances can find me)

Maybe, but maybe not? Are you a social media influencer, like on YouTube? Is social media your means of financial earning?

    • I am monetized on youtube and I spend a lot of time on twitter and discord. I took a little over a day off my socials I only now realise how reliant I'm on them. I just don't know what to do without social media, it's my go-to...
