I procrastinate longer when i things that upset me greatly

I've noticed that whenever I go online and I encounter things that anger or otherwise upset me, I end up binge-using the internet, often for hours. For example, I did feel upset upon seeing the huge slew of racist comments online in light of the recent Ferguson verdict riots, and I ended up spending around 7 hours wasting time on the internet. Similar thing happened when I end up getting in a heated debate on other sensitive issues such as religion.

Is this normal? I know I am wasting my time and I hate it.

It's probably somewhat normal, but still a waste of your time and energy that you could be focusing on something far more productive that isn't going to upset you. I do it too, it's probably human nature in an OCD sort of way.

After you've expressed yourself and held true to what you value, do not over think about the others who may not hold the same view. I also think this 'binge' means you're still grappling with the issues. We all don't agree but that shouldn't bog you down. My advice is once you've recognized you're being unproductive, simply get up and do something else around the house.

I like to think of it as a way of trying to get over whatever it is that bums you out. Ever had someone tell you there's nothing for you here? it gets so embarassing you try to roam around until you hit the road.

May not be the best analogy in the world but I think it follows the same likelihood
