I really want to eat my romaine lettuce

I just bought it on Monday and I don’t buy it often, there just had to be a damn recall and I’m supposed to throw it out? How big of a chance is it really taking?

  • I don't understand how all romaine lettuce is contaminated and how all other lettuces are okay.

Yesterday my mom specifically came over to throw away my beloved romaine lettuce. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Yeah, she asked me if I ate the lettuce yet, and then after I said no she came over to throw it out.

  • I can't believe so many people are telling OP to risk E. coli poisoning just for one kind of lettuce. Really? There are so many other options.

  • It's not worth the risk. You can eat another kind, or just a different leaf.

    • Different leaf?

      • Yes, perhaps you could try one of the other four varieties of lettuce: butterhead, summer crisp, iceberg, or looseleaf.

Maple, elm, or birch are good too. OP is a caterpillar.

          • Unfortunately, those leaves are all likely dead at this time of year.

I'd recommend munching them in the spring, when they're tender and fresh. Yum.

        • Being a smartass is like chocolate to me: I try to resist for a little bit, but I know I'll give in.

    • spinach is good but what’s with the chalky feeling it gives your teeth, anyone else notice that? I mean I know it’s the oxalic acid but isn’t anyone else kinda put off by that?? I also dislike celery because of the numbing feeling it gives but no one else seems to notice it!?

Don't risk it. Throw it out. Try dandelion salad.

    • Iceberg lettuce is basically just crunchy water. I was craving the roughage, dang it.

I'd go for it. Whats the worst that could happen? Sensationalism and fake news abound. I think this came out right in time for the holidays to drive up prices in other types of lettuce. Notice how they say throw it away. Most recalls you get your money back. All a big scam for more profits, them damn lettuce cartels rule the planet! LOLOLOLOLOL!

    • Interesting theory. I looked up the symptoms of E. coli and it doesn’t seem much worse than the bowel problems I regularly have anyway.

I assume it's an American issue... Nobody said anything on the news in Germany about lettuce...

Is it contaminated with bad pesticides, or something?
