I ripped myself off.

Last week i sold my car via a freind of a freind. I thought the engine was broken and took my dads word for it when he said the car was not worth fixing so i sold it.

Apart from the blown engine the car had some problems, broken exhaust, no tred on the tyres and the power steering wasnt working, it also had some minor electrical problems.

I sold the car for £180. I later found out the lad got the engine running within minutes of him picking up the car, the major engine fault turned out to be a loose spark plug.
He sorted out the minor faults and now has the car for sale just days later for £1000, im gutted and angry at the same time :(

Is it normal to feel like this kid ripped me off? He bought the car under the impression the engine was useless, yet i have a suspition he knew what the problem was all along. Im so angry at myself for selling the car without putting any thought into it. Now i have no car and nothing to show for it. To make matters worse theirs pictures of the car all over facebook looking fresh and clean. Ggggrrrrr!!

You didn't get ripped off. You sold the car willingly. Next time do your homework and you won't have any regrets. The other guy didn't do anything wrong so you have no one to blame but yourself. So man up and don't blame daddy.

It's normal to feel that way, but you need to realize people that buy stuff, even if they're broken always know what they're doing. I just sold a $3400 pinball machine for $400. I was told by a lot of people and pinball collectors it was going to cost $500 to fix. The guy that came and got it, opened it up, told me the part would be $40 to fix and handed me $500 for it. It didn't make me mad. I knew he was a collector and told me the truth and offered to fix it so I could sell it for full price. I let him take it. It had been sitting for years, and I knew he wanted it and he needed some money for his little girls. He was very thankful and I got it out of my basement for free. LOL! It was really heavy! I didn't feel ripped off. You just have to let things go.

You really should have gotten it appraised. It's okay, people make mistakes! Just find out how much something is worth next time you're selling! lesson learned.

You sold a car for $284.47 US? You did get ripped off, a scrap yard will give you more for the car, just so they can gut the metal out of it!

It's normal to be angry, but you weren't really ripped off. True, you thought it was broken, but he just knew the machinery better to fix it. You shouldn't of listen to your dad. This all could've be avoided if you saw a mechanic. What you can do is save your money and buy a new one or you could try to buy your old car back.

Totally normal. I would be pissed too. I've taken auto's classes back in high school and one of the main issues we talked about was getting ripped off in cases such as this. My autos teacher would do this a lot to people, sometimes even driving off in the car that wasn't able to drive at the time. If you're not that smart about cars and what issues you're dealing with just take it to a mechanic. This could've been avoided very easily. Oh well you live and you learn.
