I still read ya/teen reads? iin?

I'm 21, turning 22 in a couple of weeks; and I still LOVE reading young adult/teen books. They're not the only thing I read of course, but if I want something really light-hearted and funny to read on a rainy day then I'll dig out my old teen collection. I adore Louise Rennison, and I love how funny and stupid those sorts of books are, they would sometimes make me laugh until my sides hurt when I was younger, and they still do. I even buy the newer series that my old favourites are currently writing, I never felt any shame about it until recently, when I checked a teen read out of the library and the woman at the desk said "For your sister?" and I answered no, and she said "Bit old aren't you?"

But I love them because they are genuinely funny, not like the more 'grown up' books where they can be funny sometimes, but it's not consistent or truly silly. Plus, I've been spending my time swimming in text books and non-fiction for school and I think I deserve it. But is it normal?

Shame on that librarian for saying that! Who does she think she is?

If she doesn't like a barely adult getting a book meant for younger people, then she'll get a real kick out of someone in their mid-30s who still like some "childish" things. But some adults force themselves to to grow up, by giving up young things and general fun. She's just being a stick in the mud.

At 21 you're actually a young adult and as for the books you're reading I see nothing wrong with it, heck you could read winnie the pooh if you want! Ageism is really rife these days even to people in their 20s. Your librarian is so like whatever.

It frustrates me is that once you're a certain age you're expected to put away "childish things" bullshit! do what you wanna do.

Unrelated: I'm turning 22 as well in a couple of months, yikes! How nervous are you?

    • Well, I'm one of those people who's totally against getting older. Not because it makes me closer to 30 or anything, I just still don't want to grow up. I'm not so much nervous as I am in denial o.o

Same here, growing up sucks adulthood expectations you impose on yourself and to a lesser extent those imposed by others but oh well just have to embrace it. :-)

I think it's pretty lame because I like the dark cynicism you can only find in a jaded person and I don't think you can find that in a teeny boppers book.

though it's perfectly normal just look at my girlfriend. she loves to watch teeny shows like vampire diaries or movies with girls based in highschool (oh god my eyes and ears.) she likes a lot of other things too but she likes that stuff a lot.

what can I say bad taste is more than normal. just look at miley cyrus.

Looking at the reports of kids reading habits indicates that a lot of them can't even read. Read what you want. There will be many teens that will never achieve what you are doing.

I personally grew out out of teen fiction really quickly, but I've heard of a lot of older people reading teen lit so it seems perfectly normal :)
