I study so hard and then get a bad mark.

I always study 3 hours a day whenever we have a unit test or big exam. I feel like I am completely prepared but then when it comes to the test, I either blank out or I don't remember doing any questions like that in class. Is it my teacher, or is it me? And... Is this normal?

Is it possible you may be studying to hard? Most people believe the human brain can only absorb 20 minutes of information, after that you need a break for say 5 minutes and then study another 20 :-) relax more

I have a friend in the same boat as you. Reading and studying is one thing, but to sit for an exam is another. You've got to do some questions and quizzes so that you actually know how to apply the knowledge. Maybe have a Q&A session with a friend, ask each other questions. You can't expect the teacher to ask the exact same question as she/he discussed in class.

You're diligent and hard working, I'll give you that. But you should study smart as well.

I agree with Danny. You might be studying too hard. I too, have the habit of wanting to study in huge chunks (two-four hours) due to the fact that I work so much. I control my habit because it doesn't suffice. I perform worse when I study that way. I started taking breaks, and taking mini quizzes found in the book or online. I know that might be hard to do (finding mini quizzes) but you can also meet with your teacher and tell them your problem. Usually teachers/professors are very happy to help you develop ways of studying better. I also do group study sessions sometimes and highlight important passages while reading and then re-read them after a break or even the next day as appose to right away. I hope this helps! It sounds like you’re a good student, who could be even better with the right study skills.

    You may have test anxiety.

It also sounds like you need to adjust your study habits. Research into brain-based learning shows that humans learn faster and easier when information is studied in smaller chunks.

Try this. As soon as you start taking notes, start studying each subject for 10 minutes a day (in addition to any assignments you may have). By the time you reach mid-terms and finals, you will be relaxed when others are panicking and cramming.

    Best Wishes!

  • Thanks guys, this really helps. I guess I freak and stress about the test and then I don't do as well as I should have done. Don't get me wrong, I'm a smart student with marks over 80s, I just screw up sometimes. Thanks so much, it actually means alot. Now I don't feel so dumb.
