I think black licorice gets a bad wrap & i’m angry about it

It pisses me off when I buy all these nice licorice’s for the family for the holidays and everybody always complains about the black licorice and lets it go to waste!

Meanwhile they gobble up the red licorice like its fucking santa’s cum when in reality red licorice isn’t licorice at all! It’s just marketing! The black licorice is the only true licorice and I’m just sick and fucking tired of all these people shitting on it like it’s some fucking black turd when in reality it’s them (usually white folks) who are the turd, black licorice is the one of the best holiday candies and always will be.

I love licorice but at the end of the day it’s just a sweet, people have the right to decide for themselves whether they like it or not. In the big scheme of things it’s not even worth thinking about.

It absolutely does not get a bad wrap, it’s even worse than people say it is.

I'm Australian. I grew up on Darrell Lea. I asked about American licorice, because I couldn't find decent licorice in America.

    • All those I listed are available in America too.

I found Darrell Lea at Kroger. It was Americanised somehow and waxy. Was the proper shit, too, not the weird hard, shiny ones.

Idk why you deleted your first comment...

Pretty sure I've had the Scotty dogs and they were basically just fucking candles.

I don't remember the other brand you said.

I have never had the misfortune of eating twizzlers or cheetos. I'm not stupid enough to fall for that. Twizzlers are plastic and cheetos are...idek.

I used to like licorice allsorts...but the candy bit is just so off putting now.

Yeah, you don't want those either. The "Dutch" liquorice in Ireland is garbage as well.

Interesting wording Haha! I personally don't like black licorice . I have never really liked the texture but I like sarsaparilla, which I've heard tastes just like black licorice.

I've never liked liquorice, but when I was a kid in the USA, I used to occasionally eat Red Vines.

I came across Red Vines in the American foods section of a big British supermarket a few months back (the equivalent price in dollars would have been $3.50 for a 5 oz bag), and bought a pack so my daughter could experience one of the tastes of my childhood. She wasn't impressed. The sticks were just like I remembered them, and I realised the stuff was really pretty crap.

Logic says that anything labelled "liquorice" should contain at least some liquorice extract. I haven't checked, but there are probably laws in Britain requiring this, and I have no idea why American producers are able to get away with calling a cooked mix of sugar, wheat flour, artificial non-liquorice flavouring and artificial colour liquorice.

Licorice in America is so limited. I feel sad for you guys.

Its the same in Ireland, it's barely anything.

I get mine from the Netherlands.

My wife is Dutch, and every time she visits The Netherlands she stocks up on kilos of liquorice. You can get various sorts of liquorice in the UK, but she hasn't been able to find any British brands she likes.

I just had a look at her current stash, and there's Venco Schoolkrijt (looks like little sticks of chalk, and tastes about as nice as far as I'm concerned), De Echte Oldtimers Salmiak Klinkers and Katja Kokindjes.

I can't stand the stuff, so it's one of the few sweets she doesn't need to hide from me.

I recognise all of those names and now I'm hungry.

        Thanks.

My father periodically sends me boxes full of liquorice.

To be fair chocolate reigns supreme in America so by and large people dont really care for licorice. We have a lot of candy selections and honestly licorice both black and other flavors are just lumped together.

      • charli.m

That...is troublesome. America's chocolate is even worse than it's licorice.

People might not realize this but "american" chocolate is made to be cheap shit since most of us grew up with cheap chocolate. And some of them aquire a taste for cheap chocolate. We have just as good chocolate makers here. Fudge too!

The entire rest of the world realises this...it's not news.

What's your idea of "good" American chocolate?

The thing is, we don't have something like "black licorice" in the Netherlands. There's tons and tons of different types of black licorice, and they're all different and all black. My favourite by far is "zoethout drop"
