I think foreign language requirements are wrong

Is it just me or does anyone else think that is is just plain wrong to require X amount of foreign language in order to graduate? Some people (such as myself) are unable to learn new languages and many students actually quit school because they can't get around it. Anyone agree or am I just odd?

A lot of college requirements are ridiculous to me. I hated spending thousands for classes that had nothing to do with my degree. Just another way for them to get all the money they can.

Yes I think it's wrong too especially since most people can't even speak English as their first language anyway. They probably should focus more on that.
By the way, we don't have that here.

  • EVERYONE who is human, is born with an innate ability to learn many different languages. To state that you are "unable" to learn a new language is complete and utter bullshit (unless you are brain-injured).

Most people in the world are multi-lingual, but in some countries, where people are highly ethnocentric and typically only learn one language in their entire lifetimes, it makes sense that places of higher-learning would expect its students to challenge themselves in this way.

Suck it up and get some tutoring if you are behind in this department.

Actually no. After taking French 3 times (with private tutoring 4-5 days a week) I still could not get anywhere near a pasing grade. My parents actually paid over $2,000 for me to take an extensive set of tests by a liscenced psychologist that PROVED that I was unable to learn another language. My university actually excused me from taking the requirement and took the French grades off of my GPA. Unfortunatly I know a few people with the same problem as me but do not have the financial ability to pay for the proper testing which is why I think required foreign language is detrimental to so many.

I think it's a pain in the ass. For my final grade, my school has been saying that I must take Spanish. I tried to learn Spanish many years ago and I couldn't remember it after awhile. Now I only know bits and pieces of it. I think schools shouldn't make learning a second language a requirement. It should be up to the student.

Unless you are a Mexican you can learn a second language. Even mentally retarded people can speak a second language.
What I don't get is why you would not want to learn a second language?

I thought the same thing but honestly I think it's the one class that everyone should take and learn from. I think it opens you up to a whole new world, being able to communicate with more people and understand other cultures. I think they just want everyone to be well rounded.

I didn't learn anything in Spanish 1 or 2 and still passed. hehe.

I think people should choose the classes that will actually help them in the career they want to pursue, at least in college.

I didn't want to read all the comments but some schools don't require it. But most colleges require 2 years of it. I think it's stupid I can only get into a community college now.

Most people already speak two languages: english and ebonics.. Why force a third or fourth? Kids don't want to learn the stuff anyway. EPIC waste.

I think it's stupid, a waste of time, & money. Just an excuse to take your money. If it was up to me, only classes that go towards your degree will need to be taken. Forgien languages are nice but learning them and getting a passing grade is the challenging part!

Exactly! They teach you so much S*** you will never need to know and neglect some of the skills you will need in a job. They should trash the frivolous requirements and focus more on basic tech skills that are becoming more and more important in ALL feilds.

  • make the best of a bad situation, look at the literature of different countries and choose the country that you would visit or read their writings or watch their films. german would be hard for me and french is too tongue twisty. italian is easier and they make great shoes

  • This doesn't happen where I am from, you don't have to study a language to graduate, you just pass the course or whtever you chose to study and that's it.

But having another language at your disposal is a useful skill, even if it comes to no use, I taught myself Spanish and know various other bits from other languages.

It can be a handy skill :).

I'm not sure how I feel about this; a well rounded education and a more focused education both have it's pros and cons.

We don't do that in this country. You tend to focus on what you are good at and what you want to do. I did Maths and wouldn't have been happy to spend time away from that to learn German or Italian. However, there's a lot to be said for a more rounded education.
