I've had an unexpected amount of fun...

...by putting a couple birdfeeders up in my yard?

I never thought much for birds before but it's fun to watch them fly in, maybe push each other around a bit, and generally act silly.
There's plenty of helpful internet guides to help identify the various birds and let me know what they like to eat and what kinds of seed I should be getting based on the time of year.
Some of the birds are getting used to me being close by too. I should be feeding a few out of my hand by next year.

I never would've thought that this would be something I enjoy but it's been very entertaining.

    • I once knew someone who put a bird feeder a foot off the ground and built a berm around it for the cats to hide behind and pounce on the birds. Strange strange person.

I suggest you watch the movie, 'The Birds' by Hitchcock, before you become too chummy with your feathered friends.

    • It was on the other day. Quite amusing both in premise and special effects-wise by today's standards. I noticed that all the birds sounded nothing like birds. More like cats. What's up with that?

On a related note maybe you should see "The sailor who fell from grace with the sea" with Kris Kristofferson or "Titanic" or just listen to some good old Gordon Lightfoot.

If my vessel sinks, it will be my fault and my fault alone. Boats just don't go nuts and sink.
If your birdies go bonkers and tear your eyes out, I don't think it will be because of anything you have done wrong. Still, I wouldn't add any cocaine to the bird feed.
A modern remake of The Birds, with all the new movie magic, could turn that old flic into a very scary one.

        • Awww how cute. You're afraid of birds.

Who would put cocaine in bird seed? We're not all spoiled rich yachtsmen like you Mr Rockefeller.

Sounds like someone is putting crack in their salt cod and biscuits...Come to think of it that sounds more like a Kennedy.

      • If you look closely, the scenes in that movie are like 20 minutes a piece. There's about 4 cuts in it, pretty much continuous acting.

I was always impressed by that.

It's perfectly normal to enjoy that. I don't feed birds cause I hate that they poop everywhere especially on my car . But I do feed deer and squirrels in the park... Just not at my home. I love hummingbirds though!

    • I feed the squirrels whether I want to or not. They're crafty fuckers. Last fall I had a black bear climb onto my porch and wreck one of my feeders too. I showed his ass who's boss with a paintball gun.

I've done that before. The part I like though is when the birds are eating from it.

Ironic to see this, in my recent love/fascination with birds. All of the birds in my backyard actually love me now, like Snow White. I started feeding them a few months ago. Finally they are actually letting me walk right up to their trees to scatter food for them.

The crows are now my favorite. In my delusional thinking, "my pet" crows start to caw like crazy when I come out -- and fly in circles (gathering more crows) because I feed them and they "know who I am" by now. Me thinking they are asking for the food. Of course this is just how crows are, but I pretend they just love me specifically. They used to wait for me to leave, to gather their food. Now they let me walk as close as I wish.

My great gran had a pet crow named Hansel. He couldn't fly so she kept him cause he would have died in the wild.

    • Crows are few and far between where I live. I see a few ravens fly over but they can't be bothered with me. They must have important business.
There's a few neat youtube videos I've seen regarding crows, one is of someone's pet crow taking a bath, very cute, another is a PBS documentary about crows.
They're very smart, probably the smartest birds out there. I guess it's illegal to keep a pet crow though and in day to day life they're a pain in the ass, very destructive I've read.

Ravens? That is very cool. I see quite rare Owls, here and there. Which is neat. They must have important business too.

Well, "pet" for me means that they live around my backyard and are fed daily, they are smart.. They flock when I come outside and wait on their branches cawing. I can't see anyone caging one up/actually having pet crows. They need their freedom.

My crows gather and eat and pick up pieces to dip in the birdbath. Their final act is taking their food to trees and collecting it. Sharing and nesting together. It's so incredible to watch.
*Ah! Has only been 5mins of being outside, they're here and cawing away*

        ... Snow White.

    • You feed Chinese people to bats? That's horrible!!!

The poor bats are probably just hungry an hour later.

Your going to end up like that guy in the Verizon comercial. He gets tries to feed the birds out of his hand and they carry him away. "Honey look! I got one to land". "Oh look you've got a buddy". lol

OMG, afeareded of the lil tweeters? Not so much, though some of the flyin rats round here do steal food right off one's plate if one is inattentive. I do like the byrdsies cause under them are fishies and them tastes gooood, yum yum.
Rockyfellers? Nope, and there be no yachtsmen hereabouts, neither. Arg.

    • Thanks for your concern, I'm not so worried about being carried off by a bunch of chickadees and finches. Very low on my list.

As for you, just keep the car between the lines when you go across that Chappaquiddick bridge.

Be there a Chappaquiddick somewhere in the West Indies? Me thinks not, arg. My 'car' is inflatable, 11.5' long, powered by a Johnson 15 hp motor, goes like a bat out of hell and there certainly are no 'lines' I need worry about where I drive it.

This sounds nice....every now and then I have a hawk that sits on the edge of our bird bath.

We have hummingbird feeders and get them too.

    • Funny how that hawk is looking to eat little birds like the ones that frequent my feeders.

Ever notice how aggressive and territorial hummingbirds are towards each other?

I have seen a few of them fight over one side of a feeder ....and im like go around to the other side! Lol

One time a hummingbird was purched on a trashcan outside and I slowly approached it and put my hand under it slowly...and for like 5 magical seconds it was on my finger like I was a Disney princess lol.

And then I washed and sanitized my hands cuz im slightly germaphobic....but it was so worth it lol

        • Yeah with everything I've read they sometimes shit on the feeder and the seed can rot if it gets wet too.
So I clean the feeders every time I refill and wash up good afterwards due to what these wild birds can carry.
And I'm not germophobic in the least but I'm not stupid either.

I'll try a hummingbird feeder next summer. They sound like fun and the more birds I can have around the less bugs I have to live with.
