I view people who think of swear words as intrinsically bad as shallow
I view people who think swear words are inherently evil as being logically shallow and uneducated. Not thoroughly, of course, as even the smartest and deepest intellectuals have a soft spot, but I view them as shallow in that regard. The second someone says something along the lines of "bad words are inherently evil", I lose respect for their intellectual state. The only reason why words have meaning is because we as a society agree to use that particular "word" to convey a certain concept, not because some holy force suddenly said "this word means this".
Many arbitrary gestures (in which words are one of them), are viewed as offensive in some parts of the world but not in others. In the UK, "oriental" is a neutral word for East Asians, while in the USA it's considered an offensive slur for them. Should Americans start saying that Brits are racist against East Asians just because they use this word? Patting a child on the head is viewed as a common affectionate gesture in the West, but in Thailand it is sacrilege. Should the Thais start saying stuff like how it's an "evil Western practise" and that Westerners should stop patting their children on the head because it is obscene? People in parts of Europe applaud as coffins pass by to show respect for the dead, at times even cheering, but in many other cultures (and even some in the countries where it happens) that is viewed as obscene and disrespectful. Heck, even while applause in general is viewed as a sign of approval, appreciation or politeness in most cultures, there are people with autism who are largely disturbed by it, not to mention there are even some Muslims who think it's a sin. Should they suddenly force 99% of the world who clap to praise or show respect to stop applauding altogether because they find it offensive?
Granted, we should acknowledge that certain things that we say can offend certain people, and that when around such people, we should try to refrain from saying those words as a sign of respect (that includes refraining from swearing in public places). But when people start saying that those words are "inherently evil" and that one is never allowed to say such words anywhere - even with people who don't find it offensive - I consider that a sign of either ignorance or lack of education.
Is that normal?
