I want to clone my cat

He's still alive. He has a very unique look to him. A hairy black and white cat. I have never seen another cat like him.

He is very loving and beautiful.

I am keeping some of his fur so someday when I have the money I can clone him.

  • Sure. It's a shame cloning can't replicate their personality and the bond they have with you too; it would be wonderful if it could.

With current science they have to replicate it as a baby. This means you have to raise it all over again after the pet dies. This is for the reason that they need stem cells and the purest form of cells are found in babies. So they have not been able to replicate a adult as a adult but a identical clone of what the DNA might be as a baby.

They don't need stem cells to clone animals.

How do they make a babies without stem cells. Stem cell it the purest form of cells. They are most common in babies. Babies have not fully developed and a stem cell is stem cell is not assigned to a purpose. Stem cells exist in older people but they have a lot less of them. Children have a lot and so do babies.

You're mistaken. "Stem cells are most common in babies" is false. You're thinking of embryonic stem cells, which are only found in embryos in the early stages of development. Humans don't have embryonic stem cells after about five days of development. Babies do not have embryonic stem cells. Babies, children, and adults have adult stem cells.

Yes and the stem cells are important most pure form of cells and you just said the embryo. That means that embryo cloning is involving stem cells.

I just answered that, but it's gone now for some reason. They can do it with skin cells and such. They remove the nucleus from the cell and inject it into an egg cell whose nucleus has been removed. The egg forms into an embryo, which is implanted in a surrogate mother's uterus. Stem cells are not required. The animal that you're cloning doesn't have to be a baby, but the clone will be a baby. In fact, the clone will be born just like any other kitten.

Dolly was cloned using a mammary cell, not a stem cell, so I'm not sure what your point is.

This is a practice that many are against for the reasons people are not buying animals in shelters because of this.

It's normal if you don't understand how cloning works.

Most people have an understanding of identical twins. This is essentially the same understanding.

Yeah, but most people don't seem to understand that it's basically the same thing, so they don't understand it.

Tell me why this is such a stupid Idea? Its the same genetic animal.

It costs tens of thousands of dollars (sometimes over $100,000), the cat won't live a full lifespan, the cat is susceptible to a variety of painful and life threatening medical conditions, cloning cats often produces failed attempts (kittens that are born, but have to be killed due to health defects or imperfections), and there are hundreds of thousands of cats that need homes.

Oh I see your point on that. That is very sad. I do see why its bad. I just do not think that it is stupid for a owner to want a pet they love back. Its kind of like saying you want your dead kid back. Its understandable why they want to do this. Yes you are right however on this issue.

Thanks for listening! It's not stupid to want your pet back, of course. Losing a pet is awful. My point was that if the OP understood the risks and cruelty involved, I don't think they'd want to do this.

well personally if I had a pet I would not want them to touch him. If I honestly did want them to clone my pet I would wait until my pet was dead and tell them to take some samples from the dead body. Also You are welcome.

Yes, I would do that, and I think it's completely normal. It wouldn't be normal if it was a human being though.

Why, though? Your cloned cat wouldn't have the same personality or even the same markings, depending on what your cat's markings are. If your cat has spots, for example, I think that the location and shape (but not the colour, which is genetic) of the spots is determined during embryonic development, not genetically. You would get a kitten with the same genetics as your cat, but a shortened life span.

It will be as close as possible, and although it would be different, it would also be similar.

I don't know if the personalities of identical twin, or indeed cloned, cats have been scientifically studied to determine how much influence genetics has.

You're probably right in saying that it wouldn't have the same personality, but I don't know that for sure one way or the other and all I could do is hope it to be as similar as possible.

It's not your cat, though. It doesn't have the memories and experience of your cat. Some aspects of behaviour are genetic, but you're better off just getting a cat of the same breed, especially when you consider that pet cloning costs thousands of dollars (the cheapest I've seen is about $30,000). Cloned cats don't live a full life span, either, and they're susceptible to early onset cancer, birth defects, and developmental problems.

          • lukeuser

You make good points. A cat of the same breed is probably better when you consider the issues you talk about regarding life span (and cost). And you clearly know more about this than me.

But there is still an *argument* for preferring cloning- a cat of the same breed will be similar genetically, whereas a clone will be the same (genetically).

No it has the exact same DNA as the original creature which means you will have the same animal with the DNA.

No, it's not the same animal. Genetics isn't the only thing that determines what an organism is like, even in infancy. Like I said, embryonic development also has a role. In humans, for example, birthmarks, the location of freckles (but not whether or not you have freckles which is genetic), and a variety of birth defects are NOT genetic, they're determined in the womb by other factors. If you cloned conjoined twins, the result wouldn't be a pair of conjoined twins. If you cloned somebody with foetal alcohol syndrome, you wouldn't get a clone with foetal alcohol syndrome.

It won't be quite biologically identical, either. While the DNA in the nucleus will be the same as the original animal, the clone's mitochondrial DNA will match the egg donor.

I consider it a normal thought, but FYI his coloration might not be replicated. Apparently cat coloration has a random element that isn't based on genetics. Search for 'cat clone' and you should quickly find an article title "A year later, cloned cat is no copycat" describing what happened when they actually did this.

Some elements of the colouration are genetic, while others aren't.

Yes it have. I know you may not be updated with science today but its possible. You can do this but it can only be done perfectly on animals. They also cloned a cow and they teach us about this in science. Now They are starting to clone pets. Step into the future it has come.

Yes you do not think this is true. They have people in this program and people who can not afford it saving up for years so one day when the pet dies they can clone it.

No way, man! Those clones are artificial and the majority of them die in the lab. The ones that do live often don't live that long and sense they are "artificial" you have to wonder if theres anything "normal" to them. Do they have feelings And so on. It all reminds me of the book "Brave New World".

All living organisms feel and grow. You think a clone is any different it is not. Not all the clones die and they have already made many clone animals.

The part that concerns me is that it's "artificial" and I can't shake the thought that it was made in a lab. That side of science frightens me.

True it was made in a lab. Humans are starting to cross over boundaries some think they shouldn’t be. They say god made us in out image. God made us so its only natural we search to create more. This may one day be our downfall. We have yet to see that day.

Why wouldn't they have feelings? Feelings happen in the brain. Cloned cats still have cat brains.
