Skyrim is a great game, but there is nothing good about the medieval era. You don't want to live there.

The average life expectancy for a male child born in Britain between 1276 and 1300 was 31.3 years.

I'll make a wild guess and estimate that you're about 15 years old. If so, in mediaeval times, you'd be middle aged.

Well that's not exactly accurate. Average life expectancy was pretty heavily skewed due to high rates of infant mortality. If you lived past the age of 5, your chances were pretty good of making it to your mid 50s. If you lived past 55, chances were good you could make it to 70.

Our mean life expectancy has gone up now, letting people live into their 80s and beyond much more commonly, but the average expectancy was only so low due to the poor sanitation and numerous diseases that took many children in their formative years. Thank god for modern vaccines.

Interesting points. I only did a quick Google, and I had a vague suspicion that the 31 year figure was probably skewed by various factors.

How could anyone want to live in medieval times? The filthiness, poorness, and the starvation of peasant life which you always were unless you were royalty, what about the diseases like black plague?, the primitiveness, punishments like being chained in cellars with rats crawling all over you and being forgotten and starved, being chainwhipped for the tiniest little things, what about beheadings and decapitations, being burned at the stake just for trying to have freedom of choice or speaking your mind, just about all men had no choice but to go out and fight bloody battles, and food was usually either scarce or rotton, there were no refrigerators to keep food fresh.
I'd like to go back in time too, but I was thinking more along the lines of like the 1960s, or the era of Woodstock. That would've been a cool time.

I agree with RoseIsabella, the magic stuff was only fantasies. There was nothing magical about midievel times.

I think a lot of the filthiness is actually exaggerated, and the era was (relatively) cleaner than it's often painted to be. I was watching a documentary recently and I was surprised that people actually brushed their teeth and bathed back then, I didn't think people had the means to do it then for a long time because of the stereotypes. I think the image of the disease-ridden shit-infested streets comes from acute times of crisis, like the Black Plague, the peak of which didn't last all that long.

But otherwise yes, in terms of society and culture it was so draconian. No freedom whatsoever for the vast majority of people, gory executions, religious persecution of anyone who wasn't a literalist good Christian. Would have been dreadful for everyone.

If I was going back in time I'd go to the 90s. Yup that recent.

Yeh, the 1990s were cool. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Nine inch nails were some cool bands. Putting aside just music, throughout the 1990s was also the talk show craze, I.e. Jenny Jones, Sally Jessie, etc. So many shows were the same, about rebellious teens ("Shut up! I do what I want!!") Everyone was still always into MTV and Real World episodes then too. And those red flannel shirts and blue or green hair. And "Clueless" ("what-ever!").

    Walt Disney built Disney World.
There's also the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios.
A lot of people absolutely love Renaissance Faires.

Point being, you can create this world you love, right here and now. You get the best of both worlds. Modern luxuries and all of the medieval creativity you love.

However much I'd also love to live in skyrim, you know they would probably burn you as a witch if you started using flame thrall or revenant on people in real medieval times .. and there were no resist fire potions back then ..
Maybe just stick to the college of winterhold :)

You're getting the wrong impression from fantasy games. That was a really bad time to be alive unless you were nobility.

You could pretend you are living in the middle ages, woke up this morning and everything is the way it is now... so many magical things all around you. Everyone carries tiny windows that let you see into other worlds. Carriages speed by magically without horses. Just takes a little imagination and a different perspective.

Sure, the good parts were good. But the bad parts get glossed over. So I guess it's a mix. Just like everything else.
