I want to write to someone in prison.

I feel like a weirdo because I want to a letter to a person in prison. Nothing romantic, just a casual letter, and maybe a hope of forming a friendship.

I don't know, maybe I'm too nice?
I feel sorry for the guy, it must suck being stuck in prison for all those years and never being able to get out.
He seems like a really nice guy and regrets everything he's done, but there's no chance of him getting out.

So, it's not like there's any real danger to doing this,
and besides that, he's in a state far away from where I live.
The only real threat that could happen if he wrote back something really vulgar, but I doubt that would happen, and even so, I wouldn't really be that affected. I would just stop writing to him.

Is it normal?

I've written letters too and regret it. 0

    "Dear (OP),

Things are fine. No, I haven't seen the new Spiderman film.
I've been keeping well. Stayed in again tonight.
What are you wearing??? You didn't answer last time.
    Thanks for sending the letters.
    Your Friend, 107889"

Ehhh I dunno... Seems like a nice thing to do if you're careful. But you never really know someone...

Whether or not writing to a prisoner is a good idea would depend on your motivation for writing to said prisoner.

Depends on the crime. If he's a murderer or identity thief, I wouldn't send the letter.

    • Well, I stated that the man wouldn't get out of prison, so, I thought people would already know that he was a murderer, but maybe people get a life sentence for other crimes? (I don't know.)

People get life sentences for some really stupid things. Or more often they get 10 years each for twenty-seven stupid things, or the like.

        • I heard this story from someone (rather it's true or not is up to debate.)

His neighbor got sued for copying/priating 34 songs and got fined over $200,000, and she was only 17.
If that really happened than that's really fucked up.

  • Give it a shot, you laid out the worst possible scenario in your post anyway and as you can see it wouldn't be bad. On a slightly different yet slightly connected topic, Google "Ray Jasper letter from Texas", he was a man recently executed in Texas. Letter blew my mind when I read it.

This makes absolutely no sense, to me. The guy is a convicted criminal, so I'm assuming he actually belongs where he is (you did say he does regret his actions, so I assume he's not claiming to be innocent). Why would you care to make this creep's life better when there are so many good, decent people who you CAN help? Volunteer at a homeless shelter, or helping the aged or shut ins, delivering meals and taking incapacitated folks (possibly victims of creeps like this criminal?) to and from shopping or the doctor, etc. Don't forget all the crippled vets who need help!
Save your sympathy for those who deserve it. Your criminal had choices and made bad ones. There are so many needy people in this country who need help and have no choices. Think about this and do the right thing.

    • I care about a lot of other people, and in fact, he's not the only person I plan to write to. I plan to write this guy in Florida, he's very funny and nice, making new videos on Youtube everyday and everyone seems to like the guy. (Before you ask, yes, many of his fans have written him letters, so, he'll probably won't think that would be creepy.)

I just thought it would be something interesting and different to do to write to a criminal, I mean, it isn't like I'm the only person who does it.

But why waste your time on this waste of sperm when there are so many out there who could really deserve your attention. I honestly think you are a bit sick, sorry.

I am sensing a naive belief that cheerfulness can rehabilitate criminals if they regret their actions. Do you think writing to them would help?

            • I never stated that I was trying to help them by being cheerful, or whatever. I just thought it would be something new to try.

Ever read The Last Victim by Jason Moss, or watched the film adaptation Dear Mr Gacy? I recommend either, but the movie takes up less time. Don't ever forget who your talking to.

    • Yes, I watched that film and I understand the danger,
but I wrote my letter like back in May and I have yet to get a reply, and probably won't. I honestly don't think anything is going to happen.

Probably no danger In it anyway but thought that awareness was important. Some may even be more moved to write after the film. Letting something take over you can be nice sometimes. Not the person, just the communications between you.

how does a person do that? how do you know where to start?

    • Well, it was fairly easy for me because the inmate I wrote to has his address online, and that's pretty much the most important part.

      The rest is easy,
like writing a letter to anybody else.

what is the web site to find the addresses? thank you It may help in a way I guess to write some one alone

        Comment Hidden ( show )
          -
        • Well, it wasn't a website that held addresses, just his alone. I'm not too sure if there is a website like that, I think the best thing to do is to just type in the name of the person you want to write and add 'address' at the end.

          That might work.

I say go for it. Just know that the jailers will check both your letters, so nothing to worry about.
