I was born in china, raised in the us, but don't fit in either culture
Examples:
Work Ethic: Chinese parents are infamous for pushing their kids to succeed including using pressure and threats. I was no exception (see the article from Amy Chua a few years ago.. it's very representative of my childhood.) After I grew up, I decided I'll only work as hard as I need to live a decent life and meet the goals that actually mattered to me. In other words, I adopted the "Work to live, not live to work" mentality. For example, I'd calculate how much money I'd need to earn to have $1 million inflation adjusted in 20 years, how much money I would need to earn each year to meet that goal, and how hard I'd actually need to work to meet it instead of working hard just because that's what you've been told.
Vacations: I LOVE to travel and would spend them all traveling overseas if I were offered a month of vacation at my job. I almost always take the full 2 weeks offered to travel every single year.
Physical Possessions: I bought the cheapest house I could stand to live in instead of the most expensive house I could get a mortgage for. I also drive a 15 year old car even though I can afford a new one. I just don't see the need to show off which is fairly prevalent in both American and Chinese cultures.
Food: I'm pretty picky about eating healthy.. I cannot stand anything that's greasy, too sweet, or highly processed. I rarely eat at Chinese restaurants or American fast food. I usually cook or find healthier restaurants to eat at. When the company making Twinkies went out of business, I didn't really care that it was an American staple.. I've only had them maybe 5 times out of my nearly 30 years living in the US.
TV: I don't watch much TV.. maybe an hour or less a day on average. Maybe that might explain my eccentricities..
