Identify as gay or transgender for better job opportunities

Is it normal for straight white guys to advertise themselves as gay or transgender to qualify for certain positions? If so what kind of proof is required? If you film yourself having relations with another male is it valid to send that video along with your resume to HR department?

  • I'd try my best to identify myself as someone who'd be good at the job.

As someone who is transgender let me tell you it causes me to face discrimination. In the job market it has zero advantages and plenty of draw backs

That's just as stupid as claiming you are african american because of it being 12% of your blood.

    • Did you see that article mid summer I believe, about a college professor who spent close to 20 years telling people she's black when it was something like one of her grandfathers was black and she just happened to beat the odds with her higher melanin count

Knew this italian guy... at least he looked italian he was 50% black but he was the whitest dude I've ever seen. The only "tell" was that you could see it in his hands. Idk it's a weird genetic happenstance

No “proof” would be required but from what I’ve seen from working in mostly white male companies they ignore sexuality and focus on trying to hire a few women and people of colour to not appear bigoted. If you lied that you were gay they may ask you to write the occasional article about LGBT+ acceptance but it wouldn’t increase your chances of getting hired. Best to just try to be good at the actual job.

Being homosexual or transgender won't even matter for certain positions. You'd most likely be treated like a normal person even if you were looking for a job opportunity.

If you tell them you are Transgender are you prepared to turn up to interview wearing a nice skirt and blouse, with heels and a pair of tights.

No advantage is not a true statement.

At least not in a few countries and bigger businesses. I read an article the other day about Amazon, three major US airlines, Disney, as well as companies from the UK, and Australia giving preferential treatment to diversify their work force especially leadership and management positions.

So two people being even, or maybe not even but acceptable, in skill the job is going to someone who can fill one of the slots they feel they need to diversify.

I personally never thought my sexual preference was any business of my employer. However, on my next interview for a managers position I'm considering making sure they know I'm bi.

Being female used to be a disadvantage. Now female, LGBTQ, Asian, black, even disabled, anything you can claim to make you different than the average white male can be an advantage. This includes getting in to certain schools or winning a court case. It's affecting more than you think.

Some of this is not new 20 years ago I was on quarterly awards boards, interview/hiring panels, even performance review boards where we had to make sure there was proper consideration and percentages of race and gender. Very little to do with best candidate it was more like best in your category.

I don't think there should be quotas for anything... Hire the best person for the job regardless of whatever "type" of human they are.
