Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa...whoa
Whoa
You mean to tell me that it's illegal for me to keep 25 slaves in the antechambers of my home?
I mean not that I do or anything; that's a travesty is all. Who could do such a thing?
No. It doesn't matter how civil I am, slave labor is still wrong. I don't want to own another person.
God no. Of course not. Why on earth would I need (or want) a slave?
Edit: Ok, everyone seems to be voting and commenting yes. Wow. Can someone please explain why they'd want a slave because I honestly can't understand this at all.:/
Because slavery has become some sort of a joke now, apparently, instead of a really serious thing. It's crazy how things like bodily functions are still taboo with some people, and yet slavery is for some reason fair game.
The idea of having someone who will do whatever you tell them to:
Wouldn't it be nice if there was someone to clean your house, make your food, drive you around, or whatever else you may need them to do without having to pay through your arse for it.
Slaves must do whatever you ask, and all you need to do in return is take care of their basic needs.
Ideally, slaves should be raised from birth in a similar way to pets such that they desire nothing more than their master's happiness and have no desire to rebel.
RANT
You think slaves have no desire to rebel? Seriously? Seriously? If all I had ever known in my whole life was subservience and slavery I know I'd damn well want to rebel.
You think a human being can ever be reduced to the level of a mere pet? That idea disgusts me. People have needs beyond that of pets.
Furthermore - and this is a secondary point - I don't believe pets think of themselves as being "owned" by their "masters". They see themselves as part of a pack, and within that pack there is a strong sense hierarchy and obedience, but not of *ownership* per se.
/RANT
EDIT: Look up learned helplessness theory to find out why I believe being "owned", as defined by having no control of your own actions, is always a bad thing. Let me get you started: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learned_helplessness
That seems to be more characteristic of adverse stimulus or events. I believe it may be possible if they were brought up in a positive way.
It would work in much the same way as me being willing to to whatever my parents ask of me out of trust and respect for them most likely developed through the way they raised me.
I'm obviously not their slave, yet I'll still fulfil requests willingly. If children can be raised to be obedient, surely the method could be adapted to raise obedient slaves too.
Success would also likely depend on a special schooling system where servant-class learners are trained in the required skills to serve their masters and not encouraged to strive for their own independence.
Essentially, you belong to the class you are born into and your goal in life should be to strive to be the best and most respectable among your own people.
It would obviously never happen because it would not be fair to create such a class division in our now unified society, but assuming this was done long ago, the system may have had a better chance at success with slaves being satisfied being slaves.
------
Like I mentioned in another comment above, this is all just speculation to kill some time and boredom.
No, it wouldn't be "nice". I honestly can't believe I'm reading this. I keep asking myself why anyone would want that because I really can't understand how you can justify slavery. Turns out you can't.
And, yeah, I think I already know the answer to my question. It's beyond vile. Thank God more people have voted no.
"Ideally"? These are your ideals? Seriously?
So about 42% of the people here would actually keep a slave-pretty shocking numbers. Just goes to show there's a bunch of lazy assholes who want to lord over others.
It doesn't matter if you will never beat your slave, you are still forcing another human being to submit to your will and whims. You people should be sent to boot camp.
And to those clowns who say well you're a slave to your job, actually no-you can always leave it, you are compensated for your work and your generally have independence.
That's pretty ignorant to say, if you ever talked to a real slave they'd be offended I'm sure. I see what you're saying but I heavily disagree as it's pretty offensive and taking the matter very lightly.
I'm sorry, do you know a lot of slaves? I think you're looking for offense. Much of society is owned by the bank, indebted to them with no hope of gaining freedom. And since the idea of purchasing a person isn't an idea I would entertain, or a reality of where I live, I looked at is in the way that I actually see slavery in the world. Do you see people the way you are describing slavery frequently? Because I see lots of people who live like drones with no hope of escaping who are brainwashed into thinking they have a choice.
I do not take it lightly. My heart goes out to people in that situation. Especially children forced into prostitution. But do not call me ignorant because I don't want to play your game of "who wants a servant to do their chores?" I am not lazy and if I need to hire someone to do work for me I will pay them fair wages. If you were truly concerned about human bondage in the world you probably should have phrased the options a bit differently.
No, I see what you're saying but there's just no comparison, and it's really offensive to even try to compare it.
I've personally been forced to work, and also bought into 'work' for things I wanted and consciously signed on for. Totally different. And totally offensive to compare the two.
I ran away from home and went to New York City at 15, you can imagine the rest of the story. Yes, I know 'slavery' and knew many 'slaves'. true slaves, Not people who were paying off a Prada bag, but paying off a beating and worse.
I know of many children who had been treated this way by their own families. It may go by a different term, but it holds the same merit. "I'd better do the dishes or he'll hit me." "I'd better make dinner or he'll hit me." "I gotta keep my brother from crying", you get the point. The thing is, it can all be compared. I've known a lot of horrific pain; scary, strange, and downright creepy.. It's all vaguely familiar to the pain I see on the faces of everyday people.
I was just gonna post this, we are all slaves to the workforce in some way or another, however real slaves had it way worse.
No. I suggest anyone who says "yes" (seriously) looks up how shitty slavery is.
It doesn't have to be shitty. (It can be, but that depends on the master)
The only really notable points are that:
* They are not "employed" , but "owned", and there is no fixed job description. (They don't earn salaries or wages)
* There is no fixed job description, they do whatever they are told.
* The "owner" takes care of their basic needs, but does not pay them (money) for their work.
Not all forms of slavery involve buying someone and beating the shit out of them until they are obedient. Such old-fashioned methods could never work in a modern society.
One Example, see: Bonded Labour (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonded_labor)
------
This post does ask "If it was legal to own a slave..." ...so...
The way I would treat my slaves is that they work in exchange for food and housing, the quality/luxury of which improves according to how well they do their jobs.
They will be raised from a young age to take pride in their work and strive to be the best slave possible and see their master (me) satisfied.
I would classify being "owned" by another human being as well and truly shitty, regardless of what they forced me to do.
That's because you've been "free" your whole life.
If you were raised form birth to serve someone and take pride in that, you'd be happy when your master is happy, or rewards you, or his guests compliment your obedience or attention to detail.
Your response would be similar to that of a pet being happy to see his master happy.
------
I wouldn't be a mean, evil master, so my slaves shouldn't become dissatisfied. They may even realize that they are better off just serving me obediently.
It's easy to think "I would never serve anyone, so I can't expect anyone to serve me" but there are still people in the world that are currently worse-off the they would be if they were serving someone personally.
------
I would also like to add that I'm NOT OP, NOR do I feel strongly about this topic. I'm just writing long speculative comments because I'm a little bored tonight.
I do not believe I have been "free" for my whole life. I believe I have been controlled by my government, my culture, my friends, my family and authority figures. However, I do not believe those people "own" me just because I have to answer to them. I see a big difference between being told to do something and being owned, a difference which you seem not to see.
You can have no way of knowing what my or anyone else's response would be to being owned and made to do the bidding of another human being.
What if your slaves did become dissatisfied? Would you then become "a mean, evil master"?
I did not think you were the OP. I do feel very strongly, and I am also am a little bored.
"They may even realize that they are better off just serving me obediently." That doesn't mean they're happy or satisfied, that means that they're submitting to survive.
"there are still people in the world that are currently worse-off the they would be if they were serving someone personally." Uh, maybe it would be best NOT to pull a White Man's Burden on this (or ever).
Uh, debt bondage can be really abusive, though, so I'm not sure why you're giving that as an example of how you think slavery is sometimes ok.
Read the rest of my comments. I never said that slavery is okay. I'm just saying that there are more, somewhat less shitty and abusive forms of binding slaves. Sure, it can get abusive too, but it's a hell of a lot better than having the crap beaten out of you until you work.
Following on from the line before it, it's providing a more modern example, or rather a more achievable one in modern times.
You heavily implied that you would be willing to own slaves, which indicates that you think that would be ok. "I wouldn't be a mean, evil master, so my slaves shouldn't become dissatisfied" and your other comments about how you would treat your slaves are what led me to think that.
Does anyone else think it would be hot to use a slave as a toilet and fart in its face and piss in its hair? Man, I think it would have been hot if Screech had been Mr. Belding's sex slave on Saved By The Bell. Watching Belding rip one right in Screech's face would have been hilarious!
Interesting take on the matter. Screech does have that Jew-fro going on that looks like it might be fun to piss on. He makes really funny faces too. The more I think about it, the more I like this idea. Belding looks like he can really power-fart.
Yes, it is obvious to me that Belding is the type of man who enjoyed pissing and spraying diarrhea into the poofy Jew-fros of impressionable young men! I heard that there might be an Easter Egg on one of the SBTB DVDs that shows a "lost" scene from an episode where this actually happened!
I would own a slave, but only for sexual favours.
I would treat her like she was Kunta Kinte, and whip her until she agreed to her new name being "Dat bitch".
I think this warrants a little trip to Africa.
Who's with me?
Oh, and bring a gun.
Honestly, I wouldn't even want a maid. It'd just be too weird to have other people do things for me...I'm not the queen, and we're not in Versailles, it'd just feel too strange.
Fuck no, I am an introvert, constantly having someone other than my equally introverted husband around and in my grille would get fucking annoying eventually.
Yes, even if I could sent them to live in a guest house in the back all day, that shit would hang over my head like... man, what do I do with that guy back there?
I don't want someone that has to pretend to like me or put up with me or some shit. I couldn't trust a person like that unless I was paying them. What does a slave have to lose if they kill me? Certainly not a paycheck, their livelihood, health care... or their freedom.
No. It's cheaper to pay an employee an hourly wage for working than it is to own a slave.
Slaves are more expensive because you have to feed them, house them, and pay for their medical care. Basically a slave is like having another kid, although one that gets treated like shit.
unfortunately when i come usa i must trade slaves my for money. when i come usa i will use money to buy wives for sex.
hey, Koreans are really cool people. I bet you're confusing with gingers.
Nope, but I've worked with a team of 9 south korean girls.. I think I gained 10lbs just because they were bringing me lunches and candy to trainings. Sweetest people ever!
Isnt north korea the highly facist dictatorship side of korea, the one with all the nukes of korea
Only if it was the guy from Gangnam Style and I could make him burst into song and dance with a portable stereo at any given moment.
Enslavement of Africans that is the only other choice besides Nuking Africa blow it away
What a bunch of bozos and haters - what a ridiculous and disgusting poll. Shame on you.
No, I'm white and I would not want another white person to suffer as a slave. If they were not white, I would not want them around me in the first place.
What the fuck is wrong with people?
Edit: never mind, I just realised the answer to that is "their brains".
Yup, I'd treat him nicely though! And since this poll might bring up some racist connotations -I would welcome any nationality. As long as it's free labor and he's reliable.
Oh, maybe he could finish my college and get a decent job. That would be wicked. We'd earn some cash and travel the world some more! ^_^
Really, I'm a good owner -if anyone would like to apply!..
Disclaimer: The following refers to attractive males, ages 20-27 only. Please be drug, disease and women-free.
Talking As the person i am now.i would'nt own a slave..but i don't know how i would've been to this ideology back then so..i don't know but i hope i would'nt,cause who knows..maybe back then having a slave was as down right normal as having a Playstation,X box or a cell phone
I would but I'd treat them better than I treat myself.
We'd eat amazing food together.
I considered voting yes, but then I actually looked up the definition of slavery and realized that what I'd really want is an assistant. Someone I'd treat humanely, who has normal, paid, working hours, and isn't bought or sold.
Oh god there are so many people getting furious on here it's amazing. Like...chill the fuck out, seriously. DONT JOKE ABOUT SLAVERY, ITS NOT FUNNY. Like, you can joke about anything, cancer even, there's no topic that you can't joke about, it's just the way the joke is told that's important, not the topic.
if i had a slave i would sell after a good fuck sess and keep da profits,
Just sayin
Yeah I would Like to keep a Jew or a Raven coloured slave!...To torture ..and to try out new sorts of BDSM on "IT"
Kidding..
I couldn't imagine wanting to have ownership status over another human being.
Not like a black slave; thats racist. Just anyone who will do my work really.
No one will ever read this comment. <_<;;;
We need to re-do this post; the wording in this one is a fail.
Slavery takes away a person's rights. Going backwards in evolution is not correct.
Sex slave?
But seriously, no, probably not because I would end up treating them more as a friend or something rather than a slave I think.
If we lived in a society where slavery was widespread, we would consider it normal, as did the ancient Romans. Nobody in ancient Rome questioned the system, not even the slaves themselves. Even Spartacus only wanted switch sides with his masters. So if we lived in such a society most people who have replied no would not be so shocked.
Who said that I wouldnt be the slave? if a human being could be a legal slave so could I be. Hello, equal rights ? as much as I dont wanna be one he doesnt wanna be one so I choose no. If you know he doesnt wanna like you dont and still do it thats mean. Even harder words than mean. I mean thats mentally weird. Like people who love to torture people. They are mentally stable ussualy but you could say weird because thats not how a human was intended to be to harm the same species around them and enjoying it. Human or animal its not normal uncommon and...am I still talking about slavery? lol :P
Ah Yes, my ultimate fantasy. This slave would cater to my every whim, and, at the slightest stern of disapproval, the slave would immediately bow down and apologize, preferrably nude, ready for me to whip out the lash and BEAT the slave. Ahh what a lavish lifestyle I would live.
The slave would have breakfast for me ready by 6am sharp and not a minute late. I would make the slave listen to my horrible day at the office, and give me a soothing back massage post pardum. It would then come with me to the gym, and together wed do reps, one right after the other.
it would also be my SEX slave indeed
Naw. Not because I care about the well-being of human beings, because I don't. I just wouldn't want someone all up in my shit, even if they were doing my housework.
My ancestors were slave so no way I would repeat what have been done to my people.
A butler and maid, maybe. Not a slave. I mean I'd love for somebody to go around doing all the stuff I don't want to do, but out of choice - either because they really want to do it for me, or because I'm paying them. I couldn't deal with the guilt that comes with 'ownership' of another human being. Ownership implies forced tenure, rather than willing subservience. And force implies discipline and violence - suppression of resistance or rebellion. That's not what I'd want.
If I could afford a slave, I would just pay a willing person a salary to do any work I needed done. I think that's the only reason slavery no longer exists - its just not economical anymore. I know a few people who are treated slavishly, just without the wippings.. If i had anyone to work for me at all i would be eternally grateful.
Yep; he would be male. He would have light eye, dark hair that doesn't quite reach his should but isn't above his ears. His shoulders would be broad and his body, in shape. He voice would be mild but enticing.
...Or he'd look a hell of a lot like Gerard Way!
I'd keep him in my dungeon and do unto him as I choose. ;)
Yes. And when you think about it, it isn't really that cruel. There are shitty areas of the world where people are willing to do any job for way less than what would be considered minimum wage. I'm pretty sure those people would be more than happy to do my housework and cook my meals in exchange for food and proper housing :/
What about someone whom you took out on dates, made love, worked with, traveled the world with, and knew for years on end. The only thing is they couldn't leave your service. What if they loved you as much as you loved them and wouldn't think of having any other type of life?
Would they still be a slave?
I would assign duties according to competence:
A dumb slave would do housework, a smart slave would be my personal assistant.
If they are good at their jobs, I may reward them a bit - it's kind of against the principle of slavery, but I think a bit of motivation may improve performance.
