If you could mooch off the system, would you?

Imagine you could get a check from the government for the same amount of money you would make working. (I realize welfare does not pay as much as working, this is a fictional scenario.) Would you take the free money and never work again, or would you continue to work for your money? If you would rather work please explain why.

Personally I would take the free money but I wouldn't be lazy either (because I hate being inactive) and use that free time to accomplish other things.

I used to think so, but the lack of direction throws one into uncharted territory and can have serious effects on your mental stability. Boredom breeds insanity.

Nonsense. You don't need to go to an office, factory or any other workplace to not be bored. There are a million and and one experiences to be had in the world and anyone who thinks that only work gives you direction or wards off boredom has a serious lack of imagination.

I travel, write, paint, program, make music, read, socialise, argue with strangers on the internet and I don't need to do a mind-numbing job to be able to do this.

I know, but I still would like to find something work related, at the very least so my parents feel like they raised someone who does something productive. They've always been hard workers.

Ahhhhh why did you make me watch "No Mercy" Im so confused! I need to ask you about it! How could he not know he was doing an autopsy on his own daughter it doesnt make any sense??? Is it implied they did plastic surgery on her face or something? Did he swap heads? That makes any less sense! The head wouldnt match the neck?? WHAT DID I MISS, HOW DID HE NOT KNOW???

          -
        • shuggy-chan

#1 it was cause he did do a full autopsy in beginning, then when he finally did start doing that, he was all mind fuckd cause his daughter was missing, he switched the torso with the limbs.

and it was sorta traumatic, but I saw a few other movie that were just as sad. another Korean movie and a French movie should I dare link you those too lol

          Comment Hidden ( show )
            -
          • LilyAmongTheThorns

so its cause he was just so screwed up worrying about his daughter? I mean, I like the idea for dramatic effect and dude the last 10 minutes of that film were super powerful and like oomph, straight to the feels. but part of me has problems thinking like... theres no way a practiced coroner would not see that the head didnt match the torso, even if he was upset... but oh well. it was a cool movie.

the other ones I think from you I had listed to download are smypathy for mr. vengeance and orphan? after that one Im totally gonna watch them though you give good reccommendations!

I voted no, I'm on the track to becoming a psychiatrist, and I was drawn to that job because I can help people with it, both in the field, taking pro-bono clients, and donating the excess money I make. You can live in incredible luxury for $40k a year, anything past that is just unnecessary excess. Also, me and my mother got turned down for welfare before, because we already got 12 grand in child support per year. This implies to me that the current system gives out that amount or less. And it wasn't do to lack of trying, eventually we did get in, and they give us $8 a month.

I would take the money and philanthropize!

I'd still work, as oddly (and massochistically) I enjoy being stuck in a lab non-stop, BUT I think if I could double my income, it would be a great opportunity to kickstart projects.

I've always planned on investing my money in people who have ideas and present project ideas that have a high potential of going somewhere interesting. There really is no limit to how much of this I'd like to support, other than how much money I have to invest.

I don't even particularly care about any monetary return, I'm just looking for innovation.

I would! In fact, I'd mooch much more than just my paycheck. If nobody could detect me, I'd be getting a good 10000-20000 euros every month from our kind country! It's not like nobody's mooching of it. Politicians, state corporations, other officials... Where I live, there is corruption, but surprisingly the money doesn't stop comming XD
I'd still have a legal business. But instead of working for someone, I would invest my "dirty" money in my legal business and profit even more! When I get enough money to jumpstart my businesses, buy myself a Mercedes S65 AMG, I'd stop mooching, cause I wouldn't need anymore government money

I might be a bastard, but if this happens, I'll be a rich bastard!

You make more on assistance than working if you factor in non-cash assistance as well. Food, utilities, medical, phone and rent. You can get thousands per month all told.

How could anyone not realise that the system fails if their position is the default position? You need 51% of people to support the other 49%. When the 51% of people start getting wise to the 49% lifestyle, it's all fucked.

Also, how dare they not make my life easier?

i would rather work than mooch, and i honestly have no respect for those who would rather sit on their ass and take from hard working people, if your disabled(substance abuse is NOT a disability!) and cant work, thats fine. same for those who are unemployed and struggling (so long as theyre looking for a job), or if they are working and still struggling, but if you are able to work, and chose to go off the system instead, then i have nothing nice to say to you.

this already is a major problem here, as many people have decided to mooch off the system, and it screws up everything for both the hardworking people paying for their lazy asses, and for those who really need the assistance.

how would you like it if some lazy person moved in with you and wanted you to pay them money every week?

    Honestly....no.

I could never go to sleep at night knowing I'd taken advantage of something. If I were ever in a position where I needed temporary help with ABSOLUTELY no other option, whether something happened to me or not, then I would temporarily. But I could never "live" off of it, as I am perfectly healthy and happy.

What about those who can't get work due to there being no work? We don't have nearly enough jobs for all those who need them. I want a job because I'm sick of being a scammer but Im going to have to go to school to get qualifications, and even then there are few jobs around. I saw an article in the paper about a guy who was a certified lawyer who couldn't find a job. It's epidemic in Australia.

What about those who are on disability because they suffer from severe mental illness? Then again, the brain is part of the body and you did say able bodied.

Is it normal that I have much compassion for the the mentally ill but very little for substance abusers.

But remember that ALOT of mentally ill people are also substance abusers. Many are substance abusers because they are mentally unstable in the first place i think. You are totally right about the brain being a part of being "able bodied" as your brain controls your body.

              Touché, Tommy Kat.

Most severe mental illnesses don't come into full bloom until the person is in their late teens or twenties which is the same time the most people start to experiment with drugs and alcohol. So is the person crazy from substance abuse or is the substance abuse an attempt at self medication? It's sort of a which came first the chicken or the egg scenario.

I guess I just get annoyed at how tolerant mainstream culture is of addiction and how supportive it is of recovery among addicts however it's not rushing to wrap it's arms around the mentally ill such as Bipolar and Borderline Personality people.
