If you're 5'3.5, are you 5'3 or 5'4?

Hey all, hauntedbysandwiches here (still no idea why I chose that name years ago). I know we're always anon on here but this question I don't need to be anon for.

I'm a 5'3.5 female and I'm wondering, what should I call myself? Whenever I say I'm 5'3, people seem to get offended like the half inch means I'm 5'4 yet my 5'4 friends/family somehow notice the extra half inch shorter and make note of it telling me I'm 5'3. So what do the half inchers do? Do you round down, round up? What's the best option here?

I know it's a silly question but I'm curious what you think. :)

5'3 4
5'4 13

inches are kind of inconvenient since they are pretty large units of measurement. half an inch is honestly a pretty noticeable difference when standing next to someone.

What about in my situation? I'm 5'11.75". Doctors count it as 5 11. I count it as 6 feet. It helps with BMI!

Yeah I agree, I kind of prefer rounding up at the doctor's but they don't count the extra half or in your case 3/4 lol but they really should!

    Neither. You'd be 5'3.5

Seriously? A half inch in this context is a major issue for anyone who's actually freaking sane?

First, unless you're time-traveller from the future and every intervertebral disc in your spine has been replaced with a non-compressible prosthetic disc, your height is naturally going to vary by about half an inch between the time you get up and when you finish being vertical for the day.

Second, if you put on shoes with even the thinnest heels, your functional height is going to increase by about half an inch.

Experiments have proved that, in the minds of many people, physical height is equated with social stature. Taller people are considered inherently smarter, more powerful and more worthy of attention. I therefore assume that those who insist you should round down your height want to keep you down in the metaphorical sense as well.

I think it could go either way. Not sure why anyone would be offended over a half inch, lol. I've measured 5'7", 5'7.5", and 5'8", but since I have most commonly measured 5'7" out of the three, that is what I've gone with. I was also told to leave my shoes on for a couple of the times I was measured, which obviously made a difference despite being told it wouldn't (not sure how shoes with a minimum 0.5" sole wouldn't), which I'm sure resulted in the higher numbers.

For some people, the glass is half full, and for others it is half empty. Which of them are you, that is your answer.

I always round my height down but my guy friends usually round their height up, so I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

In math, you round up if it is 0.5 or greater.

Well I'm aware of math lol I'm just wondering in general what people do on average. My own doctor refers to me as 5'3.

The average person does nothing, unless they are forced to do so. Then they tend to do what the person forcing them wants to be done.
