Is it normal all parents think their kid is a genius?

Most parents think their precious little brats are SOOOO smart.
They talk about how their kid scored genius on some test or is at the top of their class.

Think about this for a moment. Look how dumb most of us are on this forum. Yet when we were kids, our parents thought WE were smart. And as parents ourselves, we probably think our own kids are smarter than normal, even though they are dumb asses like us.

Even people who have mullets living in some trailer court think their kid is going to be the next Einstein just because he learned to make meth at the age of nine.

what gives?

I disagree while my mother said things like that my father is up front about things from his prospective I'm of average intelligence or slightly higher when I apply myself.

    I like honesty.

My parents never called me smart they always talked shit. I reinforce positive thinking to my son myself. I tell him he's smart a lot to try to build up his confidence. I want to make him very confident but I wont lie to him when he has a bad idea.

My only parent routinely called me a worthless dirty whore. So go figure.

When you have a baby there are official "milestones" they are expected to accomplish by a certain point. E.G "rolling over by 7 months" or "laughing by 5 months". It's a great system because it means that parents know what's normal and at every health check up the doctors and nurses can say "can your baby do X yet?" And if the answer is no then they know that it might need further investigation. It keeps an eye on the babies and deals with any serous issues early on so that you can get shit sorted before it's too late. Or at least so you know there's something different about them and they will need to be parented differently.

The downside to this system is it can make parents VERY competitive, without them even realising it half the time. If baby has rolled over at 2 1/2 months old they go "yes!! My baby is so advanced. He must be a genius!". Then if they hit a few more milestones early it confirms this belief.

In reality the milestones are just vague guidelines based on the mean average of these things being reported by parents. Babies naturally develop at different rates and in almost all cases hittinf milestones early means absolutely nothing. I guess there will be a one in a million kid who hits their milestones early because they are a genius, and every parent will think that their kid is that one.

This sets the tone for the rest of their childhood. It all becomes about achieving milestones before other kids.

You may have noticed that this usually only happens with the first born child. After that parents tend to be much more realistic and stop hysterically attributing normal things to the baby being a genius.

Parents label their "genius" and meanwhile, doctors and school are trying to label them as autistic, ADD, or whatever bullshit.

So then they get the label yet schools try to hold those kids to the same standard as "normal" kids.

I feel like my kids a pretty intelligent. But the 8 year old doesn’t even wipe his ass after a shit. You win some. You lose some.

Well my parents kept telling me I was smart despite me telling them I wasn't. It's like the thing we argued about the most lol. And yes it's normal.

Same, they just say I am smart even Infront of other guests and I keep denying. I just don't see what ability they see in me.
