Is it normal facebook automatically shares everything i like or comment on?

i've come to realize most the things on Facebook I like or comment on are shared. If I want to share something I'll hit the share button. Otherwise I don't want it shared. Can I turn this feature off, and if so, how?

    Don't post shit on facebook if you don't want the entire world to hear. Pick up a fucking telephone if you want to share something with someone.

    Facebook likes to exploit people. Your only choices are to like and comment more discriminately or stop liking and commenting altogether.

    Not really sure this is the best website on which to ask this.

    Your Facebook account should have privacy options enabling you to limit or expand the audience of your posts.

    For example I can set my posts to just friends, friends and acquaintances, only me or customise it. You should be able to do this, too.

      I want to still share my posts publically, but Ive noticed facebook autoshares things when someone just comments or likes something.
