Is it normal for a couple over 40 to have a ridiculously messy bedroom?

Sure, we don't have old food or drink in the bedroom, so we're not filthy and rat-prone but it's so cluttered we can hardly walk in and around the room. At least the bed is always accessible and the sheets are always clean. I try to keep it under control but other things always seem to take precedence over cleaning the room which I always put in the "too hard" basket. It looms large in my mind as an impossible task and every other chore is preferable. The rest of the house is immaculate (apart from our ensuite which is as bad as our bedroom, although I always clean the shower/bath, tiled floor and basin.) It makes it difficult to find clothes and we always lose our car keys, wallets etc. I need to get in under control. I'm not a kid anymore. Is this normal?

Sounds normal to me. Long as y'all know where stuff is.

It's always hard to answer some of these IIN questions - what does normal mean - does it mean everyone does it? Does it mean morally acceptable? Etc... I think more people are slobs than most of us realize, and turning 40 doesn't change that. Just take 10 minutes per day to help control your mess in your bedroom, but don't beat yourself up about it and don't let this vicious a-holes bother you.

Spot on. That's the $64M question. Normal doesn't necessarily mean healthy (although it can and often does) or even that a majority of people do it. In my humble opinion, it means that either
      1. 5% of more people do it, or
      2. Most people don't do it but still believe it's OK.
"Normal" is one of those nebulous words that has a different meaning for everyone. We all came to this site because the term "normal" meant something significant to us personally.
For example, is it normal to put on weight as you get older (for over 18's, of course)? Yes, but it's not healthy.

You aren't hoarding are you? Anyway, it's good that you're questioning the state of your room. Throw out or give away the things you don't need and what you do need, put it in proper storage. Pick up things off the floor, vacuum, etc.

If you haven't touched it in 6 months or so, you don't need it. Ditch some crap, don't be packrats.

Well it's a rule of thumb. No need to throw out all your winter clothes because of the 6 month rule.

All your DVD's will fit easily on a nice little hard drive.

  • I'm happy to announce that I have spent the past two days cleaning my room, including vacuuming and dusting in all the little corners. I bagged a lot of stuff and put it into storage. I was was inspired by all of you, so thank you. The room looks great, my partner will be thrilled when he gets home from his business trip, and more importantly, I feel so much better. Let's hope I can keep it this way.

Same here especially when I'm busy with exams I just don't care what state my room is in. There are loads of stuff on the floor Clean up includes creating a path from my bed to the door.

I think the fact that you wrote 'ridiculously' in the title means you have a pretty good idea it's unusual :)

If it's causing you problems, sort it out. If the stress of sorting it out is more than the stress of occasionally losing your keys and wallet in the swamp of clothes, let it be.
