Is it normal for a girl to be annoyed when walking alone in the city at night..

... when a man tries to stop her and ask her a question, even though there's another man nearby whom he could ask instead?

I already feel nervous enough being alone in the dark city streets. I read the news, and I've tested my strength against a man before. It's hard to fathom how much physically weaker I am than a man who weighs even less than me. If the male stranger had dishonourable intentions the only way I could defend myself would be by screaming blue murder and hoping someone cared.

Is it normal that I find it inconsiderate when men try to talk to me late at night when I'm walking alone in the city?

I think men just don't understand. Now I've read this, it makes perfect sense and I'd approach a guy to ask a question instead of a woman, at night.

But before reading this I would have asked a woman. I think the fear of night walking is far less pronounced in guys than it is in girls, so guys just don't recognize the circumstances.

    • Yup, my girlfriend explained this whole thing to me a while ago, also became more conscious about walking behind women at night. I didn’t even think I was being threatening in anyway before that.

Most people who don’t have any ill intent can be a little blind to how scary some situations can be for others.

Got the same info from my girlfriend as we talked about a bunch of stuff one evening and we stumbled to street safety and how girls have it worse. I always saw myself as a regular dude just doing his thing, getting from A to B.

But in the mind of a defenseless woman in a dark street, I'm a 1,85m, 100kg large build man in a black leather jacket with his hands in his pockets most of the time and a slightly angry resting face. Possibly a mafia type...

That's what a woman who doesn't know me, or get to know me sees. I have found checking out your mobile phone helps in lowering attention in general. If you're messing with your phone, less people notice you. Also gives you a chance to catch up on anything important any of your friends might have posted, or gone through.

It boggles my brain that any guy with even a little common sense could fail to understand that approaching a lone woman in a situation where she might consider herself especially vulnerable is a dick move.

I can remember being aware of this when I was my twenties back in the 1970s. Back then, my work and personal situation meant I had to walk on city streets at night fairly regularly. I'm 6'4", and so my stride is pretty long and my natural walking pace is fast. If I ever saw a lone woman ahead of me, either approaching or walking in my direction, and there was nobody else around, I always made it a point to cross the street long before our paths intersected. Even if we weren't the only two people on the street, I'd make it a point to avoid eye contact and give her a very wide berth.

It sucks that I had to think about that and sucks even more that women have to be so wary, but that's the reality of the world.

Yeah that's normal. And a man really should get that, if someone approached me at night i'd just walk away I don't care what they wanna ask. Many predators stop women to ask a question, that's their disguise, and when they're close enough and she thinks it's fine that's when he hits.

I dont care what anyone says the majority of us women are weaker than the majority of men. I know when my ex got physical there wasnt a single thing I could do. Even some of my coworkers I'm strong enough yea but things I'm barely able to do they did without breaking a sweat. Of course theres expectations but for the majority of us. Not a good time
