Is it normal for a principal to say something truly idiotic to his staff?

My boss, the principal of the school I work at just told his staff that struggling children should not be our concern, we should only dedicate our time to those students who are already achieving high results. Is this a normal philosophy as a school? Am I a bad/wrong teacher for wanting to help the struggling kids achieve a passing grade? Are bosses usually this idiotic in regards to the industry they preside over?

And I forgot to add that you must be a very good teach and person for wanting to help them!

The thing is that struggling students need more attention then good students and you should help them! Actually you should help all of them cuz otherwise it's kind of humiliation!

that's not right. lower achieving students need help so they too can achieve higher.

Help the low achievers feel good and achieve satisfactory grades, but also make sure you make high achievers feel stretched or they will underperform and may even start to misbehave out of boredom.

I often give the smarter students more challenging work while I deal with those who are struggling so everyone has a task to complete and all will hopefully pass. My principal is now saying that is wrong and those less academic students basically deserve to fail for being stupid - His basic (paraphrased) words, not mine.

I think this is the firsttime I've heard this. Usually it seems to be the flip side and the bright kids are ignored and become bored/forgotten and the others get rewarded for less in an attempt to help them. I think both ways is wrong and I don't envy the teacher who has to make the decision because you physically cannot focus on everyone. Ideally splitting these kids up is the best strategy and with honors classes and remedial classes this is attempted but this leads to labeling which can be more damaging than being ignored in the long run. It's and insolvable problem.

being one of the most accademic in my year, it can be unbelievably frustrating to be in a class where the teacher is more interested in getting dumb kids to pass, rather than stretching my accademic potential. it is also wrong to ignore the failure kids so the only realistic solution is to set every class so one is surrounded by those of equel ability.

Yes, it seems that most bosses are completely inadequate in their job, and there ability to even realize what they were put into that position to do in the first place!

Principals are administrators, not teachers. It is a sad reality but they look more to numbers, not people. His motives are far different from yours. They shouldn't be, but they are.

You know this is bad philosophy. You're a teacher.

of course you only want to help the ones succeeding they are the stronger ones and therefor are better so they should be granted better treatment maybe even better food! and wen they grow up they should be used 6 months for breathing so we can create a better superior race :)
