Is it normal for a 9th grader to not know the multiplication table by heart?

I was just wondering if you should have that memorized by 9th grade?

I found learning the times table was way to boring so I chose to only go up to 5 :P I am a computer programmer and damn good at it so don't worry much about your times table we have calculators. and there not illegal to use.

I never learnt mine and I'm early 30's. Some people are just not good at math. English on the other hand, I was really good at.

Math is my best subject but I never learned my tables. In 4th grade we had a competition to learn them and of course I couldn't, so I couldnt get a sundae like all the other kids whp learned them.

I'm a few grades higher and I still have trouble with math. I don't have a good memory and I could remember them better when I was younger. Do you know the basics of math? Can you use a calculator? I use a calculator now, which saves me some form of embarrassment if I make a mistake.

Depends on if you have any mental disabilities. at the school that I went to, I was forced to memorize all that stuff when I was eight or they said they would flunk me. I'm not sure if they actually would have, but I went with it anyway.

I never learned them. I was good at maths, you could say very good, but maths and simple memory skills (needed for learning anything, such as times tables) don't go hand in hand. Those skills are not really what I would call mathematics.

Even if it's normal it's not good... You don't have to look at the table though. Just work it out in your head, eventually it will come automatically. Although if you haven't by now... I don't know. =/

Well, it is getting to be the norm, but it's not exactly a good thing, IMO. Children who get too reliant on technology won't be able to cope without it later on in life. I know that several diploma or final exams don't allow calculators in them, so for people who end up relying on it, they won't be able to do much when push comes to shove.

This is normal. Most people use calculators for that kind of stuff now.

    I'm not surprised.

go watch some vihart on youtube and you'll see that even people who combine brilliant math and everyday objects don't hold with rote memorization

Computers have made them less important than they were. There should be more focus on spelling, punctuation, and grammar because computers can only go so far with this.
